I remember that particular time and series of incidents. At some point in late 1969 or 1970, I attended an event so bizarre that it still stands out in my memory.

At MIT, no less, a French existentialist writer named Jean Genet, mostly famous for being gay, spoke in support of the Black Panther organization, while angry looking young black men (I don't remember if they had guns but it was assumed so) stood around like guards. I was wondering "Why is this old white homosexual man from France so enamored with the Black Panther movement?" Ahh, the innocence of youth. At the end of his speech, he promoted a book, and invited any who were interested in the gay lifestyle to drop by the book-signing desk and have a word.

All in all, pretty chintzy. The band was terrific, though.
