Since 1990 I have subscribed to two newspapers that home deliver in my area. One leans to the left and one to the right, however both often include the same stories syndicated from other papers.
Television "breaking news", face book, online only news sites , blogs and even opinion based message boards of news as GC I take with a grain of salt as many of the internet tech sites often greatly alter their online content with no retraction/ alternation statements as hard copy newspapers do.
True hard copy edition may not be almost instantaneous, but they do tend to get more of the real story 24 to 36 hours after the event as the news has been proofed to the -30- and approved by the editor.
Ironically for this post I must use the Washington Post link to present the story of the multiplication of fake face book accounts after comparing first that my right and left leaning hard copy local papers printed the same article word for word and as of 12:55, the online version at the Washington Post .
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...after-santa-fe-school-shooting/?noredirect=on
My neighbor who choose to only use free online and television sources for her news as of Sunday was still telling us how the Santa Fe shooter was armed with an AR 15 and semi automatic pistol because that was what she had read online and saw on television as breaking news.
I on the other hand, admitted to seeing breaking news of a shooting in Texas but I would know more after reading of it Saturday, which at that time, the AR 15 was reported to have been a shotgun and the semi automatic handgun the TV news reported had become a .38 caliber six shot wheel gun.
While small differences, those two differences indicate how almost instantaneous news on various free sources can be more inaccurate than the 24 to 48 hours later hard copy news. Plus a rolled up hard copy can be used to line a bird cage or rolled up to swat a spider after you have caught up with the news of the past day or so at a leisurely pace
The link above shows how face book accounts started popping up to get the incident to go viral and some of the misinformation. Who knows how many online sites and possibly shoddily overseen TV and small circulation papers are still part of the misinformation?
The internet while good for opinion discussions , how to discussions and other entertainment , still cannot be totally trusted for accurate news sources as many in society now choose to use their platforms for their agendas and to gain viral status.
