Dow is down over 400 points. I understand the Facebook problem, but I don't understand why all of tech is taking such a big hit. Some of it has to do with new tariffs on China for stealing intellectual property, which I would think should be good for American companies.

IMHO some of the angst about facebook is coming from the large advertisers.
Mozilla Suspends Facebook Advertising Amid Cambridge Analytica Scandal
Mozilla, the software company best known for its Firefox internet browser, said it is suspending paid advertising with Facebook in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal.
IMO: the markets are more volatile now because more people have direct access to the markets. Internet trading allows moms and pops to trade the markets alongside professional traders, then add in the computer driven trading and you have a system ripe for a chain reaction. Tariffs can be good or bad depending on in what you are invested. Look at gun stocks during the obama years. In that case you can use panic to make money, if you have the stomach for it.
The market is built on the future outlook. You can't look at one day, or, even several weeks to get a bead on it. We just came through a timely and needed correction and the recent volatility is likely to go on for some time. I wouldn't try to time the bottom in order to buy, just buy at a constant rate and when the big dips come, throw a little extra at it. They will level out in time and we will see the markets rising once again.
what happened? After Mulvany spoke, the Dow went from about 400 down to a little over 200 down. So what happened a little after 2 pm that caused it to go from about 200 down to over 700 down?
There's lots of bad news about Tesla. They're showing all the earmarks of a company with a cash flow crisis. They can't count on meeting production goals for the cars to earn money. They're stripping Solar City to get their hands on cash too. If the overall market goes, Tesla is a goner.
China just hit back with some tariffs on US goods.....and so it begins
