Perhaps this should be in the dark room cause I'm sure a bunch of homesteaders have some pretty strong opines on the subject.
Whats your favorite junkyard? I Like the Pick-A-Part and the Pull -a-Part chains but I miss the weird old places that were more than cars, the ones where you might find anything to get your mind working.
I dunno WHY anyone would think this is a potential darkroom subject.... But then again, I am not surprised by much and so someone, somewhere might find a way to twist it up negatively to be offended & make it offensive.
I recycle, reuse, repurpose quiet a lot and why get something "new" when something old (and likely stronger & more reliable) could be adapted or reused. I hit Auto-recycler yards, scrap yards and more when seeking a solution to a dilemma and it's really quite fun to take something designed for one purpose and find a new purpose for it.
Maybe I'm an oddball but somehow I doubt that, as pretty much every Cabineer & Homesteader I have met, known or talked to, has done similar. Do I have a Fav ? Not really, depends on what I am after.
PS: I loved shows like "ScrapHeap Challenge [original uk edition]" and similar where people have to get creative with "junk" to create something new, interesting & different. And maybe having been raised on an old farm, part of that life was never waste anything that may be of use later, was an essential part of the lifestyle.
No, that's because Ford owners have a junkyard. Just kidding. I've got 5 of them sitting in my driveway now. One of which keeps dropping pieces of itself every time it hits a bump.
Several really great pick and pull yards have been legislated out of business here. The ones left pull the items for you and if it's not functional or is not the same part you requested they won't get you the right piece. Bought some rims from one which they swore were good rims only to find the rims were too warped to use. And they weren't much cheaper than new rims.
Would the two barns with nine parts carcass vehicles matching or close enough matching my 30 to 54 year old drive vehicles count as a favorite junkyard?
My favorite junk yard was an outdoor one, where they would let you go out back to find your own needs. I could wander around all day and just look at the old tractors and machinery, and all the stuff and pieces of iron I could drag home(but didn't) to make something out of it.
Alas, the owners yielded to the lure of easy money and sold it off for a new WalMart.
Well I prefer not to be in a junkyard because that means something needs fixing. If I do go I always go to the one I have used for thirty years. Creature of habit I guess.
If you head from Benton to Fayetteville there is a yard on the east side of the road. I have no idea what town or who owns it. It runs at least a mile. I wanted to stop and inquire but my hosts said they didn't want to stop, we had time. They had to get me to a conference in time. Guess they figured if this damn yankee biker junkyard dog hooked up with a bunch o' reb junkers all would be lost. Likely so. Love junkyards.
I used to love wandering the junkyards. Now, most wont allow it due to insurance issues. I have pretty much given up on fixing up old vehicles anyways, just do maintenance.
