It is such a dead ringer for a Brushtailed possum that I'm willing to bet my keyboard that this critter spent time with a taxidermist outside of the USA before coming here. Flea markets are known for unusual finds.
Maybe it's just me, but the face structure seems much more possum-ish than raccoon-ish.
I was thinking with a raccoon the face flattens at the eyes for about an inch before the nose comes out of the face, I'm not really seeing that with this animal in the picture. The snout of a possum, however, continues straight back from the nose to the ears.
But, it may just be hard to tell, and unless someone has experience with such animal or give us information we don't already have, we may never really know.
It could be that the taxidermist Clairol dyed the animal's hair, or it was already an albino due to genetic variation before it was stuffed and mounted... again only a guess.
That is a rare Rock Clinging Ornamented Raccoon. They are a freak of nature with only 1 in 10,000,000 being born. None have successfully been bred because they are all transgendered.
I'm very offended by this post. Where's my safe space?
