All,
My first year 4H daughter, about to be second year, got last year a female Goat. The goat was fairly small but not a kid.
The goat is a cross between a Fainting and the other half escapes me...daughter/wife knows more on this than me. I will ask tonight.
Anyways about two weeks ago we had something in the barn that took out for dinner 3 chickens and a rabbit of ours. We were originally thinking cats as recently a large number (5 or so) of dropped off cats have shown up out of the blue...I am thinking they have been a round a while and our recent cold snap that lasted 2-3 weeks brought them in from the fields/other neighbors. Though just recently I saw a fox for the first time in our area.
Anyways I had the kids check all the animals to make sure they were fine...They all seem initially fine and at this point we noticed the Goat appears to be shedding a large amount of fur. Underlying the shedding fur appeared to be a beautiful brown coat coming in.
At this time we also noticed small scraps on the Goat on the ear and one spot on the hind quarters...Nothing huge or deep very superficial. My guess from rubbing on pen walls etc.
Anyways the daughter brushed the goat at this point to help with the shedding.
Today, a week or so later, the goat shedding appears to be much worse (whole body) until I realized under better light/conditions that the area where the new brown fur was previously.... is now down to skin and has progressed to about 1/8 to 1/4 of a hind area.
The barn (41X48) in this half only has her and a trio of soon to be freezer pigs. They are separated by a empty 12X12 pen. We have been using straw as bedding. Recently (last month or so) changed her over to Goat Feed instead of a Feeds them all type of feed with a little Hay and Corn on the side.
So my question, any ideas on what this could be,what to look for, or how to remedy the condition?
I will try and get pics tonight or tomorrow morning at feeding time.
Thanks
Chris
