Has anyone used the plastic poultry fountains on a heat base? I put a small one gallon on last night in SE Michigan and the base was warm and the plastic has not melted. Do they tell you to only use the metal water fountains for heat transfer and the water won't freeze or will the plastic melt? I have bought numerous metal units over the years and they keep leaking over time so I may go with plastic. Any thoughts? Thanks, moday
Never had an issue with the plastic melting. The heating units aren’t designed to reach high temps just to make sure water doesn’t freeze. The only concern I would have is if the waterer itself was empty for any long period of time.
I use the 5 gal plastic buckets with the "chicken nipples" in the bottom, put one of the drop in bucket heaters in it. The heater is plugged in to a thermal plug that only activates when it's below freezing. The whole unit is hung, which keeps it very clean and easy to refill.
I use a 3gal plastic fount on a metal heated base that says "No Plastic". It's worked for years and never gets even close to melting the plastic
I hooked it up last week and even though it runs hot, there is enough surface area that the water never really gets above 40F and keeps the plastic cool to the touch
Go ahead and use it!!!
