Who would have thought the cartoon South Park would be an informative cartoon?
I have watched it for several years and while I realize it is a cartoon for adults - certainly NOT for children - I just recently found out how informative it is.
I will agree - it is foul mouthed. But they certainly bring current issues to light and they are informative.
You are probably asking "How is a cartoon like South Park informative?"
A while back I saw an episode where they talking about Mormonism. The show talked about Joseph Smith and his "viewings" and quite a bit of other stuff. It got me wondering "Now this can't really be accurate. I'm quite certain South Park is making some of this stuff up." I Googled it - and sure enough everything that South Park talked about was accurate.
I also saw an episode that talked about Scientology. That episode talked about the different "courses" you could take to learn about life - and how they give people free "tests" - to determine about their life. When it talked the the "evil alien dictator - Xenu" that captured other aliens, froze them and brought them to Earth to kill them near volcanoes. After that episode, I thought there is no way possible there was ANY truth to that - and Scientology. After Googling it, I found out amazingly I was wrong - and South Park had pretty much covered Scientology correctly.
Now, who would have thought that, from a cartoon on tv?
There are a lot of people that have been educated by that show without even realizing it. Kind of like Bugs Bunny from the days of old. How many people know classical music and old Vaudeville show tunes just because of Bugs Bunny? Southpark once did a fairly accurate cover of the Dickens novel, Great Expectations. They hide a lot of stuff in the subconscious of people who otherwise might never consciously experience certain things or explore certain subjects. They seem to do it in a fairly unbiased manner, ridiculing all things, instead of just the things that fit their agenda. Those guys are genius. Have you ever watched "Team America: World Police"? Thought provoking stuff, a little dated now though, but still applicable.
Sorry, but the parody's they do are not that accurate. I'm sure you found some websites that said they accurately portrayed the two religions you brought up, but its the websites that are already against the two religions saying it.

Yes, I'm sure your 30 minutes of South Park and 10 minutes of research taught you much more than my 24 years of experience does, not to mention my year of investigating all sides of it good and bad before joining as an adult.
So what part isn't true?
I'm not Mormon but I do have Mormon friends (Jack, apostate and even some Temple Mormons) and though I didn't ask the temple mormons about it, the others seemed to agree.

My favorite was the immigrants from the future. Some people became gay so there wouldn't be immigrants from the future. Others tried fixing the problems that cause the immigrants; but they decided that was to much work and decided to just be gay about it instead.
Another favorite was the election one. "The choice is always between a giant douche and a turd sandwich freedom is picking which one"
That said they aren't always factually accurate; they do distort things at times for comedic value.
What a waste of time watching something like THAT. Corse it IS shows like that one that so many on the left get their education from as to what is happening in this country even if spooned more left they love it as they learn can learn so much more from the left side only form Hollyweird. LOL
I didn't say I thought ANYTHING about it. I simply asked MN2501 what he thought they got wrong.
For the record, I haven't even seen it, but I have seen The Book Of Mormon.
I'm guessing you and he are both Mormons so I would have guessed either one of you could explain the inaccuracies.
Southpark portrayed a stereotype. Some may fall into that type but it can't possibly account for all of Mormonism. MN may be on an entirely different branch of Mormonism. His comment about the branches you talked to lead me to believe that.
I didn't see anyone talk about different "branches" of Mormonism and I'm not aware of different sects within the LDS Church.
There are FLDS but as far as I know, they are disavowed by LDS with good reason.
ETA: I'm actually a person of faith as well, (United Methodist) so if you think I'm here just bashing faith, you'd be wrong. I was simply asking a question.
I've known many very nice Mormons and while I don't agree with their tenets I'm not bashing them. All religions can be pretty funny in a certain context.
South Park regularly has religious figures on and Joseph Smith is a frequent character that appears. While I have seen a number of episodes especially the earlier ones, I do not know the precise one you're talking about. So asking me to explain what they got wrong for an episode I may or may not have seen doesn't really work, does it. I do know how they've treated Mormons in the episodes where it is brought up and I know the best way to lie is to tell just enough truth to make it believable but to twist it to get humor out of the situation which is what they have done in every episode I have seen with Mormons or Joseph Smith in it.
If you have a specific question feel free to PM me.
There were a few different branches that broke off from the main LDS Church over polygamy - a few still exist and yes the (main) Church has no connection to polygamous sects like the FLDS (and they have nothing to do with us). The largest (non-polygamous sect) is the Community of Christ (formerly called The Re-organized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) with about 250,000 members, the rest are smaller, some much much smaller.
The main LDS Church based in Salt Lake City (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) has approx 16 million members worldwide.
I grew up surrounded by many fine folks who were avid Mormons. I never really got involved with their beliefs, but they always paid a little more for farm labor and their checks always cleared the bank the first time through. That made them ok in my book. On a side note they all seemed to have a bit prettier daughters too.
