We had a small tornado touch down here today about a mile from our farm. We hardly ever get tornadoes here in Oregon. It tore apart dairy. Really makes us think about putting in an underground shelter
Sorry folks for any losses, I am more afraid of hurricanes than tornadoes. You go 1/2 mile 90 degrees to a tornado and it misses you. Hurricanes take a wide swath and spawn tornadoes on the edges. I have lived in what used to be called "tornado alley" almost all of my life, except for the Florida panhandle for two years. Camille did more damage than any tornado I ever saw. I road that one out at a radar site. Good thing though if you came through with no losses other than some buildings that can be replaced. Chances of another one coming your way are really minuscule to justify a bunker. Now call it a root cellar, fallout shelter(50s& 60s anyone) or multi purpose underground storage to justify or just use the SW corner of your basement .
Michigan has a few, not common. A few years ago, a tornado ripped the roof off of a 5,000 head dairy barn. Hard to find temporary housing and milking for so many. Everyone with a trailer hauled cattle all night.
I was just reading about that tonight. Mountains are getting snow this week. I'm thinking winter is creeping up on us but hopefully we will have some nice cooler fall weather so we can get more done.
A says they would never live where there are earthquakes but lives in an area of hurricane activity. B is petrified of tornadoes but lives where there are numerous mudslides. D has a phobia of wildfires yet believes folks are nuts to remain in flood planes.
E Loves Alaska and hates the heat and humanity of Florida. F prefers the lifestyle of New York City over the isolation of Wyoming.
You hate mosquitoes yet swim the ocean with sharks; I dread visiting the cities with high crime and violence, yet I live where there is no law enforcement.
It is all about roots and preference.
