We have had many pets abandoned this spring. I had recently housed a feral cat that had kittens yesterday behind the dryer. I moved her to a bedroom with her 5 healthy kittens and she bolted out of the room as I was closing the door. After unsuccessfully doing my best to locate her in the basement, I placed the kittens with an experienced mom who had 4 one week old kittens. Then, I was woken up an hour ago by the Mom who is so engorged she looks like she will explode. I have placed her in the dark bathroom with 3 of her litter, a soft blanket, food, water etc. She is not acknowledging the kittens fully because of her discomfort and now fear. How do make her feel better so she can nurse her kittens? It is so sad.
If the kittens know what to do (assuming they do) you may try holding her down so the kittens can feed. She won't like it, but once they suckle she will feel better. They won't be able to dry her, but when they are hungry again they will go to her. Her body will adjust.
