I was going to leave James a note telling him he ought to read the reviews of his post so as to know that he is missed, but I cant figger out how to do it.

Or, find James' post, click on his name and "start a conversation". It's really no different than the old format -- just different nomenclature.

#6 ·
Right beside where it says profile page it says Start a Conversation. Click that

Well, you can't start a conversation with yourself. Had you clicked on Jame's name you would have had that option. Here's what I get when I click on your name:

Farmboy is right -- Jwal10 has turned off the ability to PM him, and has made his profile private. Sorry to doubt you, Farmboy. He said he was on another forum, so if anyone knows which one that is, maybe you can let Farmboy know so he can make contact.

Bill,
On this new platform one way private messages are easily generated is by hovering over the In Box envelope icon at the right side of your blue logged in line at the top of the page under the site logo.

When you hover over it , a pull down will automatically show with Start new conversation as the second option of the bottom line.
Just click on it and it will take you to a conversation page and all you have to do is enter the message recipients user name, the subject and your message in the message field.
when your ready to send it, click the red start conversation icon at the bottom.
Then wait until a flag shows over the inbox envelope and when it does, hover over it and click the show all icon when it appears in the automatic pull down, select the conversation message your looking for which should be at or near the top of your messages and read and reply if you choose to.
Most of all don't worry too much about how the new platform is different. We are all still learning it, just like we all did for the first five or six months after admin switched platforms before.

I have no problem leaving the extras up as that just goes to show how just as every other platform HT has used, this new one has kinks combined in with the learning curve. Even we mods have troubles with new platforms at times :)

The reason I ended up posting in triplicate was because when I clicked post reply, for some reason the site told me my reply did not post and returned me back to the submit reply with my text in place. Whatever the glitch was I hope it is gone or been fixed by the system crew.

As far as how the site is now run, I don't see that big a difference as when it was run in the day when Mean Dean was the systems wizard.

During that era , admin worked with the mods and members to give us a free to use board host and used the available resources at the time to keep the site up and "the lights on"

Now instead of a board host that is a part of a small server farm, we are a part of a small server farm that is a part of a multi facet web presence of many server farms.

Austin however is still administrating us as has always been and using the currently available resources to keep the lights on for our facet of the web presence we are now a part of. As every good admin we have had he is working to know the boards and discusses with the members and mods as he does his best to maintain our HT community and keep the lights on and protect the HT part of the web presence we are now a part of.

The HT site has always been both a good free gathering place with good discussion and information. It has also always been a corporate value component that has been able to generate much of it's overhead costs and some profit for the owner.

Austin is diligently making effort to preserve the HT site identity and figure the best and most respectful ways to use the currently available tools to reach a balance to give HT the best he can, keep the lights on, keep the site secure as possible and most of all keep that which always had made HT that special place we all have made it.

Yes we have seen changes but we have also seen much effort to keep the special qualities that have kept HT as the special place it is to us . One change we have seen is that we are beginning to see a few new folks come in searching for their homesteading and life questions as we all have done.

Give the efforts now being pursued a chance and keep in mind that our admin is in constant contact with us all as we all participate on our favorite boards and HT . We all share the same goal of keeping the site the comfortable place it always has been and if a few new members come in, there is nothing wrong with that.

HA. Jay, you can say it 3 times OR 30 times. I read it once and was lost before I got around 1/2 way through.
Terri, why don't you ask him to come one time and see the feelings people have for James.
IF I try to do irt, ill just mess up over and over, and by the time I give up, Ill be so mad I might transfer some of that to James lol

Shrek -- when someone has his profile hidden, can you still use the "hover over envelope" method of contacting a person, or does having the profile hidden mean that person can't be contacted via PM? I've always used the hover over name method myself but it doesn't work for folks who have hidden their profile.

Try sending one by that method and it will tell you if it's blocked.
There are different options for who is allowed vs who is not.

No, there's more than that there.
Here's what I see when I click your name.

Here's another way to do it:

Of course it doesn't really matter if jwal10 doesn't return to the site.
I actually had a similar problem, but with an unrelated member of this site! There was no 'start a conversation' option to be seen, so I went to message this person through my own profile and manually typed in their name to do it. I was unable to send the message to this person, it came up in red type "you are unable to send a message to this member". I just figure they have me on ignore or sonething....but who knows??
