I think you're on the right track by keeping him near you or tethered to you while he's in the house. Put him in his crate when you can't supervise him and watch his every move when he's not in there. I've had good luck training my big dogs by taking them out on a leash, praise, but not overdoing it, and keeping them in the same room with me when they're inside. If I see them start to wander off, or start to sniff and walk away I ask them if they need to go out. If I'm too late and they're piddling or pooping I get really agitated and make a big fuss about what they're doing, then quickly get them outside, hopefully to finish up. Something like, "Oh NO, NO, NO!" and I take the collar and get them to the door and outside fast. They see me acting like I've gone a little crazy and it doesn't take them too long to figure out I don't act like that when they go outside. You have to keep them in sight all the time for this method to work. Otherwise they learn to slip away somewhere quiet and go, away from their "crazy" mom.

Min Pins = almost impossible to housetrain. Ours have never been reliably trained to go outside. It's too easy for them to sneak off to some other part of the house and go. They're so small you don't even know they're gone until they come back.

I never thought I'd like to crate train, but after Parvo contamination the last three members of the family were crate trained...one due to being ill from Parvo, two due to fears of catching Parvo. I've converted and am a huge fan of crate training now. All three were super easy to housebreak.

Leash the dog to you. We had to do that and we had it under control after a couple of days. I hope you find relief.. btdt.
