Toyota 'popping'out of fifth gear...

    What do y'all think would be causing this?

    Wife drives truck and stated it popped out of fifth while driving.
    Truck has 128,000 miles on it,1998 model,4cylinder,5 speed.

    I vote for shot tranny.At least thats been my experience,FWIW.

    I'm not totally familiar with those particular trucks which may have a common easily fixed problem. I would check to see if it is going all the way into 5th gear and nothing is restricting movement of the shifter. There is also the possibility that the actual shifter itself is worn. The end that goes into the trans has a piece on it that engages the levers that move the forks that move the gears. If the end of the shifter has wear it might not be moving the lever all the way. Also the plate that holds the shifter to the trans might be loose allowing the shifter not to engage all the way. These cost little or nothing to check and fix and I would start there. Going into the trans could be costly.

    I'll agree.
    Based on my auto salvage yard experience, I've seen that Toyota trucks have a history of weak transmissions.

    Good news. Whenever you have a standard trans vehichle that pops out of high gear it is usually a loose transmission, belhousing or at worst a bad pilot bearing.

    Did a quick search and it seems that the bushing on the end of the shifter can wear or break(small plastic bushing) causing this to happen.

    Also found out that it is indeed relatively common for Toyotas to 'pop out' of gear...

    Could be a number of things including a struft transmission. Might also be weak engine mounts so that when the engine and trans wobble about too much the lever gets knocked out, especially likely to happen on the over-run.

    I will sadly don my mechanics hat and see what is what tomorrow....

    I had hoped NEVER to wear that hat again... :)

    Remove the shifter boot by removing the screws around the ring. Pull the boot up, put the trans in neutral with the E brake on. Remove the 4 bolts retaining the shifter to the top of the trans. Inspect for worn parts.

    you could also do what a previous bf of mine used to do.

    he whittled a stick to fit between the seat and the shifter. once he got up to speed, he just propped it in place with the stick.

    worked for another 100K miles.

    Well test drove it and couldn't make it pop out of gear so started to take the topcover off and broke the 12mm socket...

    Took this as a sign to tst drive it more and go for a longer test drive....I cannot make it 'pop out' of gear UNLESS I purposefully try to not put it all the way into fourth(can't even get it to do anything odd in fifth)

    I am going to go get the oil changed and have them check the fluid level in the transmission...and let it go at that.

    It is REALLY weird to drive the Toyota after my Dodge-feels like I am sitting on the ground and it is VERY light steering and kind of peppy...

    Bad news.I have had several trucks.They all start to pop out of 5th gear first.I used a tarp strap to keep mine in till it wouldn't no more.Then 3rd will do the same thing.But thats miles down the road.I'd drain tranny and put several(3-4) cans of STP in it.Then fill with 90 weight grease.That will keep the whine down.After it jumps out of 5th gear it can be driven many miles more ,but drain and use 4 th gear instead of 5th.Gas milage will suffer some but not bad,unless you drive on hiway a lot.After 3rd goes out usually it is done.But mine lost 3 rd ,and it still had 4 th to get me home.Jumping out of 5th is caused from running in 5th gear at too low of speeds.Top rail which has 5th gear on it don't get enough oil slung on it to lube it propperly,which causes the front bearing to go out.(inside the tranny).You should never drive in 5th under 55 mph or so.I've got 20,000 miles out of one after 5th went out.But change your grease as above and it will flushout and get clean oil back so you don't have premature problems with it.STP will make it a little harder to shift till it gets warm(maybe the first 10 shifts) then it will shift as normal.Good luck...A least you know what is going to happen down the road aways.Been there and done that....idontno

    Helpful hint on changing grease(oil ) in tranny.Take the top cover off and pour the STP down on top of the shifting forks.It's reall hard to get it in the little hole on the side.It could possible be the plastic button on top of shifting rail but I bet not....Good luck.Let us know what you find out....idontno

    Toyotas are notorious for this. The first one I had was an '82 that started doing that after about two years. I've heard the Car Guys talk about it several times - although I don't remember what they said. You could go to cartalk.com and possibly look it up.

    We used a bungee cord attached under the dash one side of the shift lever, and when we put it in 5th we pulled the cord across and hooked it on the other side. Worked for us for a couple more years until our son totalled the car.

    Before you pour 90 weight into th tranny make darn sure its not one of the ones that use automatic transmission fluid in a standard transmission. The newer ones you don't use transmission dope. By newer ones, i mean 1988 and newer.
