A while back someone posted a hypothetical shtf scenario as kind of a food for thpught exercise. I think it had to do with nuclear reactor meltdown. Anyway, it was a good post and i think we need more "what would you do if..." scenarios.

Because of that thread I became motivated to find out where the closest reactors are and know where to go to get information on them. I researched the prevailing wind patterns and also now know where to go to find wind speed information.

    Let's do some more!

I think they mentioned something about this on "doomsday preppers" today.
Most of the show was about tornadic evnts, and being diabetic.
Thats one thing I never thought about, How does one prep for a supply of insulin?

My kids and I like to do the what ifs. Ours are if there is a massive forrest fire. We had a small fire start down the road this year with it being so dry. Was a great test. I gave the kids 15 minutes to get ready and be in the car. Get what you can't live without get to the car. I have a fire safe with all important papers.
Another senerio we have due To living by a military base. A chemical mishap strikes and we are quarantined to our houses. We have 30 min to secure. Animal and human. Or leave.

I'm thinking another most likely senerio will be employment is lost. Now you have to make your bills and make ends meet.

Angie I think you should start a senerio of the week thread. What is everyone else's opinion.

MH, have your local VFD or DNR come in and do a FireWise assessment. They will make reccomendations on how to make your place more fireproof or at least defendable. It's also free and you have a chance to meet the folks on the ground who defend the community if fire rears its ugly head.

I know our local Dnr. We are surrounded by national Forrest military base and family land most I it wooded but we do have lost of marshes. We will fair pretty well. We keep the dry stuff burned or picked up. We have a good plan.

Oh and I know our local vfd. When they hear my road they run faster. My dh was a local vff. He headed up the mfr's that's why when I needed them this last July they made it in record time.

You buy a small propane fridge. I did some research and a 20 gallon propane tank is supposed to last 3 weeks.

If you haven't considered what an EOTWAWKI event would be like for a diabetic you haven't read One Second After yet. Definitely in my TOP 5 of PAW fiction books, I strongly recommend reading it.

There are now shelf-stable forms of insulin. I don't know much about them... I just saw a commercial on tv. For a Type 1 diabetic (person born with the disease) They would have to have enough insulin to get them through the duration of the event. Some things could be done with diet to help them to last longer though.

For Type 2 diabetics, the prepping should begin now. Many people have this form of diabetes due to dietary choices that they've made. Every effort should be made now to improve health in order to become less reliant on insulin. For some people it might mean losing weight, exercising or just making better food choices. Many people like this are on medications like glucophage or glypizide rather than insulin shots. Glucophage can be stored easily.

For those of us without diabetes, we should be getting regular checkups to make sure that we don't have pre-diabetes, a condition that can lead to full-blown diabetes.

Post shtf, most Type 2 diabetics will have lost weight due to increased work/activity and might not need to use as much insulin or other sugar-regulating drugs. If their new diet includes fewer processed foods, then they will likely have a lessened need for them as well since their diet won't contain as many chemicals and other bad things.

From a holistic/natural standpoint, there is a plant called bitter melon that is a Chinese medicinal. It grew rather easily in my garden a couple of years ago. Someone that used to post here a lot (Christy ACB) tested the results with a blood glucose monitor and said that it did work.

I think that medicinal insulin comes from sheep. I'm not sure where I heard that though...

I vote for Angie to give us a weekly scenario. Yea! You are so cool, Angie! :)

I read in one of my herbal books that the bark of crape myrtle trees/bushes can be used to treat diabetes. It might be worth investigating.

Poor Angie, thats a huge request to make of one person who already gives us so much.. Why dont you start the first one, and every week or two, depending on the replies, another member can come up with something different.

Martianchick, I think you may be right about the sheep, I was thinking pigs, but that might be thyroid...and you have to grind up the organ. I do believe in a long term scenario a type one diabetic would die.

I'm with beaglebiz on this. I don't think you should be asking Angie to do the thinking for making up new scenarios each week when Angie already does so much. Anyone can start a new thread, so if you want new scenarios threads why not start it yourself?

Ok. Fair is fair. My bright idea so I will take the first round . But you sure didn't give me much time to think it through.
You gotta cut me a break because I'm relatively new to all out prepping.
