Hi everyone! We had our 1st birthing 2 days ago - 2 adorable kids.... nubian/boer cross 3rd generation so they look like little boers  I'm debating to let the kids just show these 2 at the fair (looks like my other 2 preg does won't birth until late March unless they start showing more soon) Our 4-H fair is the last week in July and these guys would need to be 60lbs minimum to show and auction off. We were hoping that she would have given birth in January for those extra weeks for weight gain but it didn't happen - no biggie. My question is this because for some reason I am drawing a blank on an answer from anywhere... What is the average rate of gain for meat goats per month? They will be fed a locally mixed and grown grain (17.5% protein) +pasture/hay. I did not get a chance to weigh them when they were born - but they are about 8lbs a piece with the lil buckling maybe a pound more. Now - we purchased these does as dual-purpose - with the intention of letting the kids stay on her for 2 weeks - then milk 1x per day (morning) and let the kids have at her the rest of the day but seperate them at night. So I don't know if that will make a difference in the growth rate or not. I don't have a problem going and purchasing a couple of wethers for my kids for their 4-H projects if it will be an issue. They are both new to goats (and so am I) and so I don't want them to miss out on selling their animal at the auction as that is how they will pay for their animals & feed for next year - and pay me back for this year! Thanks!!
