I went checking online to see if I could find some food materials that were different from those already on the list to give us more items from a pantry and found some rather interesting ones. They aren't real cheap (some up to $9/yd), so I may get them or I may not, but if anyone wants to know where, let me know. Here is what I found:
~Broccoli spears - would look like pickled broccoli.
~Artichokes
~Cabbage - purple
~lemons
~Apples - tiny whole and sliced ones
~Mixed nuts - golden brown

I also found some that had butterflies, pinecones, some bugs, and frogs. The animals were spaced out and should work, but the pinecones were completely full.

Since my jellies and juices sit on the pantry shelves, I was wondering about possibly using 1 or 2 of them. I make a wild plum jelly that is a very pretty (almost clear) pink and then I also make peach jelly that is a clear peach color. A red for tomato juice might also be good for a jar or 2.

PS~I don't remember if this was part of the instructions, but are we to put a label (food or otherwise) on our blocks or is that going to be left up to the person's preference to add when the jars are cut out and going into the quilt.

The use of a generic fabric was alluded to in the "Jar Quilt Discussion" thread.
Yes, you could submit something that one might consider to be a "relish", or a "jam" or a "beverage".

When you design your quilt it will be up to you whether or not you add labels to your jars.

As far as labeling the individual pieces of fabric that you are mailing out? No, that will not be necessary.
But, please, post here so I can put it on the "list".

If anyone wonders what one or more of your fabric pieces are suppose to be, they can check the "list" to see what you submitted.

So, it you submit "generic pieces" that you think of as being "apple juice" and "cocoa powder" and "Koolaid", the recipients of your fabric can check the "list" and figure it out from there.

That method will save you from making 90 individual tags!

You will need to make 30 labels though.

One for each packet of 3 fabrics that you are sending for each participant.

These 30 labels need only to give YOUR forum name, and the State where you live.
You are welcome to give more info, but the minimun info requested is your forum and and your state.

crazyeights 02/23/07 03:34 PM

I was at the fabric store today and got some material that is lady bugs climbing on green vines. I got it figuring it would like you stuck green vines/leaves in a jar and the lady bugs were crawling on them.

Now just need to find two more! Gee, this is fun!

I cut 32 of each of my 4 fabrics, put a small label on the back of each piece with my info and mailed them off this morning.

Oooh, I found cool stuff!

Just placed my order:
Dominoes
Wine corks
...and SUSHI!!!

Peacock 02/24/07 01:12 AM

I got 2 out of the 3 fabrics I ordered at a pretty good sale price -- but I kept looking because it was fun. So I thought I'd share some links to fun fabrics that might be helpful for those still looking. Here are the sites and the product codes to put in a search box. Hope it's helpful to someone.

http://www.bearpawquilting.com
mdgn_b54 pennies
mdgn_b52 nickels
novg_5852_45 play balls
novg_aju_5034_2 salad
novg_chip_c8480 poker chips
novg_c9888_g pirate coins

FB-cheese-E608
FB-nuts-E606 mixed nuts in shells (a different one than the one listed I'm pretty sure)
FB-pasta-E603 mixed pastas

...and here's a fabric I very nearly picked because it was so cool, but I thought that some swappers might find it a little bit weird and morbid. :)

tallpines 02/24/07 10:51 AM

Thanks for the links, edayna!

If anyone else is inspired to mail EARLY, even before Sign-up is fininshed, you can follow Pasotami's example of mailing me 31 pieces of Each of your 3 fabrics.

If we do get 30 people signed up, then 31 pieces will be just RIGHT :)

If we do not get 30 people signed up, then you have 2 options.
I will either return your own "extra" pieces to you, or, I will mix up all the "extras" from everyone, and send you back the appropiate number from the mixture.

Or, you can just wait until sign-up is completed before sending, so you will have the accurate number if it is less than 31.

tallpines 02/24/07 10:57 AM

Now to add another thought to the confusion!

I have a few fabrics that will work for the jar quilt theme but they are too small for the overall sharing with everyone.

If you, also, have some fabric like that, and its something that is not already on thr LIST, you might think about sending a piece, or two, along, and I will send you something else, in return.

caroline00 02/24/07 04:59 PM

is 1 1/2 yards enough for 31 pieces?

tallpines 02/24/07 08:45 PM

Quote:

I've only done the math in my head-----not on the actual fabric.

1 1/2 yards of fabric will be equal to 54 inches by 42 inches.

Ususally the print pattern runs on the length way grain. The pieces we are cutting the are 6 inches wide by 10 inches tall (according to the print pattern).

On the 54 inch length we will get 5 pieces. (54 inches divided by 10 inches).

Then we can divide the 42 inch width by 6 inches and we get 7.

And, 7 times 5 equals 35 pieces.

However that does not figure any possible shrinkage.

Considering the shrinkage factor-------

Since we have 54 inches of length to cut 5 10 inch pieces, we end up with 4 inches extra.
That 4 inches should be quite adequate to cover any possible shrinkage.

On the width we are dividing by 6 pieces and that comes out to exactly 7 pieces.....total of 42 inches..........nothing left over for shrinkage.

So, therefore, you will get 6 pieces that measure 6 inches wide, with the last piece probably somewhat narrower than the 6 inchs wide.

So, that gives you "5 X 6 equals 30" pieces that are the proper 6 X 10 inch size.

Plus, you will have 5 pieces extra that will measure 10 inches tall by "less than" 6 inches wide
.
You can send me one of those "less than" 6 inch pieces as my hostess piece and you will have 4 of them left for yourself.

The SIMPLE ANSWER to your question is:
Yes, 1 1/2 yards will easily give you 30 pieces.

And, one of those narrower pieces can be used for that #31 hostess piece.

And, we may not even get 30 particpants---might end up with only 26 or 27.
But, be assured that we will NOT go above the 30 limit :)

(:D :D I love this kind of math problems)

OK Yankee 02/24/07 10:25 PM

I just cut mine. Because they are allover patterns, I folded it selvage to selvage and cut 6" strips. Then I cut those strips into 10" pieces. Out of 1 1/2 yards I got 36 pieces. (With a strip at the end of less than 6")

Thanks for the links Edayna! I really need more fabric, NOT! I loved the pennies and nickels. We always have them in jars for the Grandkids.

This is really too much fun! I can hardly wait for the squishy in the mail!

Yankee

pasotami 02/25/07 09:57 AM

Oh Ladies, I did not mean to jump the gun on mailing but here on the homestead the month of March is what I consider a nightmare of "not enough time"!! I will have to start plowing and planting, and get fence built in the places where "mother nature" is unwilling for people to walk in the summer months. It is also the start of "birthing" season here. I consider it an exciting time but usually I am so tired in the evening that it is all I can do to finish up sewing projects that need attention. I figured I'd just play it safe and mail in early....
Also, I have a little of each of the fabrics left over and I also have some of one that I cut wrong.... it was my fault but I told my son that I could not do 4 things at once and while he was telling me his daily plans I blew it on several (LOL - nothing like putting the blame somewhere else, glad he knows me well, he just grinned and said if I messed up too bad I'd have to go shopping again!) But now to finish - if you would like to add this extra fabric to the passing out statch - I'll be more than happy to mail it snail mail (slow, cheap way) to you.
I also had a mental image come to me as I was playing with the button fabric - this would look cute with coins and other round things.... a jar laying on it's side with the lid off and the stuff spilling out of it onto the shelf...... I tell you, I'm going to have a load of fun with this quilt!

tallpines 02/25/07 11:08 AM

If you'd like to mail that other fabric I will be glad to pass it out.

I will be sending a smaller square to every one, too.
It will make a shorter jar :)

It is a print on "colored pencils".

In regard to your idea about the buttons or money falling out of the jar---------
I had a thought of sewing a few real buttons around the base of the "button jar".

I'm glad you mailed yours early~~~~~
But, I'm not sure if receiving that early package will help ease my enthusiasm............or if it will cause the enthusiasm to MULTIPLY! :hobbyhors

AngieM2 02/25/07 08:28 PM

I have all three fabrics washed and one cut into the 6 x 10 inch pieces. so some progress was made.!

Dog gone it, Nan!
I just checked the Discussion thread and didn't find a post from you!
So just to be fair to my previos post :

"So, if you want to join us and have not entered into the discussion, you'll need to wait until March 1 to sign up First come, first served -- beginning at 12:01 a.m. on March 1, Central Standard Time."

I can't sign you up just yet.

I need to hear from just a couple of other people before I open it up to non-discussion people.
But it looks like there will be room for 5 or 6 more people, so be sure to post early on March 1 to be guaranteed a spot.

Glad to hear you will most likely be joining us :)

OK, I printed off the list and am hoping Merrily has some good fabrics...

my family (husband and children) will suffer at Chucky Cheese while I am shopping... my children hope it takes a long long time and my husband better bring a good book :)

so why a trek into the city tonight...
my husband and children are going to attend a harmonica club meeting  ... I guess I better bring a good book for that one... I play a lot of instruments but not the harmonica... but it gets me to a quilt shop :)

Billie in MO 02/26/07 05:45 PM

My fabric is washed and waiting to be cut. Tried to get away for the day and go to Utah to some quilt stores and, wow, was that a fiasco!! Got there OK and went to one quilt store and was on my way to another when my car went "kablueee!!!". Parked it and then had to walk (@1mile) to get a phone card and try and call Bill.

His brother lives in the area but was moving and we hadn't heard from him yet as to the new address. But he managed to track him down and he was less than 2 miles from where I was!! So was their new house! Actually a straight shot down the road I was on! Somebody was looking over my shoulder that day!

So Bill, grabbed the dog and our flatbed trailer and headed for UT to rescue me! And so we spent Thur, Fri, and most of Sat with his brother and family, catching up. Hadn't seen him since last July when we surprised him on his birthday. Could only see him for less than a day then.

Bill starts his new job next Mon. in a town @ an hour south of us. So it looks like he will be taking our truck for awhile, as, the car looks to be going nowhere any time soon. Nor me for that matter!! Unless it's on foot!!!

Tomorrow we have to clear the garage so we can get the panels out for the art show on Thur. and have the garage cleared for "what's coming back "from the art show. Don't ask on that one!!

So I guess, next Mon. when Bill heads to his new job, I'll be able to have some free time to get things cut.

More than you wanted to know, I'm sure!!

TxCloverAngel 02/26/07 07:58 PM

I got the FIRST "squishy" today! :hobbyhors
The Cherries, Mixed fruit, polished rocks in water, and buttons have arrived.

Pasotami! You mentioned sending another fabric -- that you cut wrong?
And, you've already sent 4 different prints?

You are very Generous!

caroline00 02/26/07 11:51 PM

ok, was the mixed fruit a mixed citrus fruit...some whole fruit and some halves?

I got mixed citrus (see the above)

avacados, red onions and tomatoes(mixed)... also some whole veggies and some cut

zuccini (whole)

garlic (whole) ther is some space among the garlic but garlic holds its shape as it sits on another.

all of them are Kyle's Marketplace brand fabrics

pasotami 02/27/07 07:05 AM

TallPines - the other fabric is the same button fabric just cut to the wrong size, thus it would not be anything different than what you already have....

Caroline00 - the fruit is whole, the colors are ...hmmmmm.... not sure just how to describe them.... they are not "standard" colors, they are a tone down shade of normal standard fruit colors. If you look close in the fruit there is a brown bowl with some of the fruit in it but you really have to look at it. Hope this helps.

Caroline,
It sounds to be like you hace a GOOD place for shopping if you found all those options in just one place!

You've described 4 fabrics.
Which 3 will you be using for the Swap?

Tami's Mixed Fruit is more like fruit you might see in a still life painting of mixed fruit. Its different from the the "Kyle's Market" prints that I've seen.

Let me know which of your prints you will be sending so I can put them on the list :)

LoveCountry 02/27/07 09:41 AM

My Progress....

Potato Chip Fabric.......Washed, Ironed, Cut....DONE

Egg Fabric......In the Dryer now

Apple Fabric......Need to buy more, I cut half of it wrong. The apples are laying on the side rather then sitting up right. :(

~Rachel

caroline00 02/27/07 10:08 AM

If no one else finds garlic, I'll use that as an extra trade if anyone wants a 4th and make some hanging garlic bags in thier pantry.

so all but the garlic, I guess.
