There seems to be several on amazon going from about $28 to a few hundred if you want a bigger set up.

Amazon.com: Premium Solar Charger - Ultra Thin Solar Powered Backup Battery and Charger for Cell Phones, iPhone, iPod, and Most USB Powered Device - Also Includes Built-in LED Reading Light and Window / Windshield Suction Cups: MP3 Players & Accessor

This one is one I'm considering....

and this one seems a bit stronger.

I am remembering using the car dash plug (different car now) being used to charge the netbook and cell phone during the tornadoes event. That is something that was very good to have.

There isn't enough land area in heavily populated urban areas for people to feed themselves if they had to do it. It is not just demographics, it is also just the physical lack of land and overpopulation within a small area of land in metropolitan areas. Heavily populated urban areas are really counter-productive to their inhabitants in many ways.
Their only resort is to stock up food ahead if they are living in such crowded conditions. Unfortunately, not enough people do that.

I just get a sick feeling when I think of the hardships these urban people could face.

Dean - I see you chose to be snarky - limiting the parameters of what those solar items can help.

They charge the smart phones and some the laptops/or netbooks.

The reason I tell of this. those two things helped me get family to AL from Missiouri, Arkansas (near TX boarder) and Tennessee after the tornadoes without any power in the city. I was fortunate to have a plug in the car to charge them. The radio - that would be something to know where there are cooling places, or even places to get the ice at the few stores that are open on generator power.

So while IPOD is what you focus on, me - I'm focusing on outside communication as I've found out first hand that cell towers do come up before houses, as some put generators on them; and communications is definitely needed to help get yourself and loved ones through localized disasters.

And for just a flat practical consideration - that's that much less power being pulled from your electric bill. And if going off grid or limited grid - it would make a difference.

And there are other things such as wi-fi units, small lights and other things that might be adapted to being charged by these. And, of course, larger items from larger solar collectors.

So, Ipad, = don't limit your outlook so narrowly.

Yes, but they CAN do something to help themselves, if only a little bit. Sitting on their ignorance and not seeing what is happening, after it happening to them now it rather a slow learner, or purposefully lazy. If nothing else, they can take note and learn what is around that might help make it better if it happens again. Anything but sitting and waiting for someone to do it all for them.

And disabled can assess the situation and see what could be done differently if it happens again.

There are also hand cranked/solar radios that will power a cell or tablet like this one: Amazon.com: Ambient Weather WR-111 Emergency Solar Hand Crank AM/FM/NOAA Digital Radio, Flashlight, Cell Phone Charger with NOAA Certified Weather Alert & Cables: Home & Kitchen or this one: Kaito Voyager Multiband Radio - KA500

I remember when the tornado hit that Angie was able to get insurance taken care of for her family members much quicker since she could get on-line to do it. And if you have young children having charged entertainment devices like an mp3 player or a portable DVD player means the kids have something to do while their parent(s) concentrate on getting things done around the place.
