While I share your obvious passion for gun safety, especially when instructing children, I would guess you have made a mistake or two involving something deadly in your life. If not, then you aren't in those situations as often as some of us. I said all of this to state the I myself believe in teaching Gun Safety with the idea that accidents can happen, by our hands and those around us. That is why we focus on repetitious training when handling a weapon...... and carry a trauma kit.
I guess my point is, if you always and I mean always treat a firearm as loaded then there can be no accidents. That is how we train our kids and how we ourselves treat our firearms. There is no room for stupid mistakes that this guy made. Negligence in our eyes is not acceptable. So that is why we teach gun safety with with the idea that accidents can not and will not happen. Just because intent was not present does not mean that you did not initiate the action which caused the outcome. Gabbing a rattle snake with your bare hands not intending to be bitten, but you get bit does not make that an accident. You knew that it could bite you yet you did it anyhow, just the same with a firearm, you know it can discharge yet you stick your thumb over the barrel, no different. A lapse in judgement is not an accident.

If TSHTF I'll run to to the store, buy what I need with now useless pieces of paper, accepted by employees who are more dedicated to their job of accepting these pieces of paper than saving themselves. It sounds like a pyschological comfort mechanism for those who aren't truly prepared.
There's going to be a time lag from "HTF" to "everyone REALIZES it's HTF".

Unless it's something like a Nuke attack, or huge natural disaster, many things will go on as normal for a while.

And if the store was closed, but you really NEEDED it, what he listed is what was THERE

Example:

If Isreal nuked Iran tonight, don't you think most stores HERE will open tomorrow morning?

1. Would Israel nuking Iran cause it to HTF here?

2. If those stores are open do you think you'll be the only one to have the idea of stocking up? Those things will just be still sitting there?

It certainly won't be good for the economy considering what it will do to gas prices, and could be the BEGINNING of "SHTF" here.

But choose any scenario you like.
There will always be those who react, and those who are oblivious

Millions of people will be as clueless then as they are now

The items will be sitting there until someone buys them.
Most people won't THINK to buy them if they don't have a use for them (meaning a gun that uses them).

These were the choices:

At the Gas Station, there was some 12 gauge shells available, a couple of boxes of 22 LR's and 22 Mags, and 2 boxes of 38 special lead roundnose, 158 grainers

Well if you know that for every potential disaster scenario that you will be able to get to the store and pick up all of the things you need you are in good shape.

No one said either of those things at all

The main point of the OP was that choices were limited
