While I share your obvious passion for gun safety, especially when instructing children, I would guess you have made a mistake or two involving something deadly in your life. If not, then you aren't in those situations as often as some of us. I said all of this to state the I myself believe in teaching Gun Safety with the idea that accidents can happen, by our hands and those around us. That is why we focus on repetitious training when handling a weapon...... and carry a trauma kit.

I guess my point is, if you always and I mean always treat a firearm as loaded then there can be no accidents. That is how we train our kids and how we ourselves treat our firearms. There is no room for stupid mistakes that this guy made. Negligence in our eyes is not acceptable. So that is why we teach gun safety with with the idea that accidents can not and will not happen. Just because intent was not present does not mean that you did not initiate the action which caused the outcome. Gabbing a rattle snake with your bare hands not intending to be bitten, but you get bit does not make that an accident. You knew that it could bite you yet you did it anyhow, just the same with a firearm, you know it can discharge yet you stick your thumb over the barrel, no different. A lapse in judgement is not an accident.
