Peanut Butter going up

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...ghtMostPopular

As much as 35%!!

<Choosy moms will have little choice but to pay more for peanut butter.

Another hot, dry summer has devastated this year's peanut crop, sending prices for the legume skyrocketing and forcing peanut-butter brands including J.M. Smucker Co.'s Jif, Unilever NV's Skippy and ConAgra Foods Inc.'s Peter Pan into startling price increases.

Wholesale prices for big-selling Jif are going up 30% starting in November, while Peter Pan will raise prices as much as 24% in a couple weeks. Unilever wouldn't comment on its pricing plans, but a spokesman for Wegmans Food Markets, the closely held supermarket chain in the Northeast U.S., ...

beaglebiz 10/11/11 05:23 PM

aw man...i wanted to see what wegmans said (you have to payto read the rest of the article). they are holding their price to 1.29 until the end of the year. I have about twenty-thirty jars in storage, and was not worried, but maybe I will get another ten (i will look on the shelf first). Peanut butter is nice, because it can be used for a meal, a sauce, or a dessert. We go through about a jar a month except at Easter/Christmas...when we use more for baking cookies/candymaking. I recently got about 15 jars of the new planters brand from store deals and coupons

Ohio dreamer 10/11/11 06:13 PM

We don't eat too much peanut butter, but I have been buying a few jars every time I'm shopping. These predictions on price rise have been around a few months now....which has been a great blessing as we have been able to buy ahead to try to "hold out" while the prices are higher. This is the first time I've seen somone say "how much" the rise may be....35% is really high and will be very painful for many people.

Roadking 10/11/11 08:42 PM

My kiddos love PB&J...I'm pretty well stocked as I saw it coming a month or two ago. Even so, the price has been creeping up. Now it's gone from creep to jump.
Love a pantry and storage.
Matt

Mrs. Jo 10/11/11 08:53 PM

We eat about 15 lbs of peanut butter every 4 months or so. I order a 15 pound pail from azure. It's 65$ right now. That's a lot. We kind of depend on it for the little kids. Excellent protein and fat for them.

Harry Chickpea 10/11/11 09:54 PM

One 12 oz jar every year. Not a big deal here. One of the few areas where we can wipe our brows and go "whew."

calliemoonbeam 10/11/11 11:40 PM

I just picked up two years' worth of peanut butter...and two jars of preserves, lol. You should have seen the checker's face! :D

I have plenty of jelly, jam and preserves already, but I'm trying a couple of new flavors, for me anyway, cinnamon pear preserves and vanilla cherry.

mommathea 10/12/11 12:02 PM

Hmmm, peanut butter has been on great sales here for the past month. Like .99 a jar. Even the name brand stuff, but also some generic. We're stocking up!

Trixters_muse 10/12/11 07:11 PM

There was a thread a few weeks back about it going up and I had already been catching it on sale so I bought even more. Now I am seeing the higher prices in the store so I bought two more jars this week to add to my stash. Thanks to BOGO sales and coupons I have 24 jars of the medium and 12 jars of the larger ones so I guess I am set for awhile :)

bassmaster17327 10/13/11 01:15 PM

How long does peanut butter stay good for?

calliemoonbeam 10/13/11 03:31 PM

There's another thread here somewhere talking about peanut butter too. I said there that I've used Peter Pan up to 3-1/2 years old with no problem, although they officially say it's good for 18 months.

It's been my experience that most foods last a lot longer than the official "use by" dates. I can't speak for other brands personally though. I do keep mine in a cool pantry/closet with no light other than when I get something out, don't know if that makes any difference or not.

secretcreek 10/13/11 11:25 PM

I thought it would go rancid if I bought so much that it sat in the pantry for some time. I buy mine in a large jar from Aldi's . I try to keep plenty on hand. We go thru so much of it with young men in the house. Plus our church food pantry sends a lot of it out the door too. Guess I'd like enough to see us through the winter, at least. Plus it's a good bug out food with whole wheat it becomes a good protein and fat to satisfy the belly.

We go through a jar about every other day. I am not sure how we are going to stockpile enough...

according to stilltasty.com an unopened jar it will last two years before it could start to loose quality:

http://stilltasty.com/fooditems/index/17925

and after two years it may still be edible as long as it was stored properly. I've eaten pb that was more than a year past the best by date and it was fine.

Ohiogal 10/14/11 01:04 PM

Just bought a 2 quart jar at Krogers for $5.99. I've eaten PB that was stored in a cool/dry place that was over 5 years old without a problem. The key is cool and dry and out of direct sunlight, like the basement.

marinemomtatt 10/15/11 05:23 PM

That jar of peanut butter that is slightly off...Peanut Butter Quick Bread!!!!
There are several recipes on the net.
Peanut Butter bread is quite tasty with honey or jam...and more peanut butter!
Good French toast too.

I found an un-opened jar in the mobile mansion last Spring, it was about three years old, found the bread recipe in a cook book from the 40's, gave it a try and am very pleased to not have to feed off peanut butter to the critters.

I know I've been seeing a few threads. I just did a forum search and found quite a few threads. It seems I was the first to give the heads up- back in August. :cute:

As I walked into Sam's tonight the greeter told me That I better stock up on pb as it was going up at the end of this month. I told him that I already knew that:D.

It had already gone up a $1 from last month, but the butter, bacon and flour were down a some.

barnyardfun 10/15/11 11:27 PM

I guess I am really not understanding why there is such a hype about PB prices going up. In the news? What about all the other food prices that are going up? Why is PB getting so much attention? And why is PB going up all the sudden?

Maybe this will explain:

http://money.cnn.com/2011/10/14/mark....htm?hpt=hp_t2

Wholesale price was $450/ton last year, the harvest that's coming in now is $1200. That's how bad the shortage is.

Peanut butter is a cheap staple protein in lower income households. Or at least it was until now.

Terri in WV 10/15/11 11:34 PM

Maybe it's getting the hype because it's a more main stream product? So many people now don't scratch cook so they couldn't care less about the price of flour, beans, sugar and such. Of course some of them can't even be bothered to make a pb&j now, they have to buy them in the freezer section(a huge pet peeve of mine).

Catalytic 10/15/11 11:39 PM

Peanuts are big business here, and back in June/July when I started asking about peanut hay, I was told then the crop probably wasn't going to be worth a darn this year due to the heat/drought. I was fortunate to get my peanuts for boiling at about the same price as last year, but while peanut hay was all over CL last fall, it's few and far between this year.

WOW! Thank you ladycat! While I don't agree that it should be getting all the attention since there is so many other things going up also I do understand that it is a common staple nowadays.

Becka03 10/16/11 07:59 AM

hubby just says- well then we don't eat it- but to me not having it pre SHTF isn't an option if I can prevent it

beaglebiz 10/16/11 08:45 AM

Remember the most important thing....What's goiong to happen to the price of PEANUT BUTTER CUPS!!! Yikes!

sdnapier 10/16/11 01:22 PM

Good grief. I want to know where they get the inflation figures that they spout from Capitol Hill. We're supposed to be having something like 3% inflation rate or something. Many, many staple items have risen more than 10-20% in the last few months!

That's what my husband said too! He went straight to WM to stock up. I sent him with coupons too lol! He eats those things like they are going out of style.

ladycat 10/16/11 01:52 PM

Yes, it will be anything that has peanuts or peanut butter in it, and of course things like roasted peanuts and mixed nuts.

Horsefly 10/16/11 02:02 PM

I've been grabbing two large jars every time I go into the grocery store. But I forgot it's not just PB. I'll have to stock up on peanuts in general. Need to make an Aldi's run this week after work.

marinemomtatt 10/16/11 02:07 PM

Fast food joints absolutely love the fact that food prices are rising.
Lately we've been noticing fuller parking lots and longer lines at the drive-thru.
