Flea Mkt. Finds
What have you found lately that is good for the prepper at a flea market?
My latest find (score?) was a genuine Corona grinder priced at 20$, just looking at it a little longer than normal brought an adjustment in price to 18$. A little more stalling an hesitation got it for 15$.:grin: |
I've been getting the canning jars with the hinged flip top lid with the rubber gasket. You can get replacement gaskets on amazon.com. I'm putting dehydrated items in the jars.
|
A riveter forge for $40, and it came with a hand powered blower. :bouncy:

Nothing as we've stop attending. Reason being we were fast approaching the hoarder stage of prepping & cash flow has been diverted.
When we did go on a regular basis we use to bring a 1900 Sear Roebuck catalog with us along with a few reference books on antique tools. More than once we were cut a deal simply because we knew what the item was, how it is used, & were believable in that we would use it. Good luck everyone it is an addictive pleasure. ~~ pelenaka ~~ |
I need to go back some but I have purchased many items at the local Yard Sales and local Flea Markets: 2 Coleman propane and white gas lanterns; several kero lanterns; carbon steel knives; sockets and Vise Grip Pliers; cast iron fry pans and Dutch Ovens. There are many good buys out there if you look and know your particular products value.
Most times the seller will barter and accept less than originally asked. Shop when you don't need "now" but when you can buy at a price that is what you can spend for the items now. My total: cast iron pots & pans; Dutch Ovens and fry pans is about 12 and the kero lamps is about 20? (haven't taken an audit lately) I have never paid more than $5.00 for any Cast Iron piece. I never paid more than $4.00 for a kereo lamp. Friday is my favorite shopping day: Families leaving and selling; families selling off Mom and Dad"s household goods. They want out and will take a fair offer. |
Flea markets today are not like they were 30+ years ago. I used to love them. Today, people sell off junk stuff from china like swords and statues. I miss the old fashion flea markets.
|
I got two stainless Steel bowels, like the ones my parents have had, and still use, for the last 40 years. Good investment.
|
There are still some good buys out there. You need to look and know the value. Just because an item is low priced doesn't mean you should buy it if "you don't need it".
My mind has a list of items I need, not junk I don't need. "An educated buyer wiil find good buys". I agree the markets are not as good as they were before the internet. |
Man!
Some of you all are making great finds, best I got this last time was two cases of pint jars for 2$ a piece..:goodjob:

My best luck is at the junkyard. I recently bought a bucket of automotive tools for 20 bucks containing;
-Proto slide hammer for pulling axles -Battery test meter with a 90 amp ammeter -3 jaw gear puller -Blackhawk 2 jar gear puller -Wye puller (either 2 or 3 bolts) -Proto body filler file (this one will adjust to curves, and had a spare file for it) -3 forged C clamps -2 body dollies (for straightening dents in cars, etc.) -5 hacksaw blades -Set of Allen wrenches -Rethreading dies, coarse and fine, 3/4" to 1 1/4" -Starter "bump switch", for jogging the starter when you need to crank the engine from under the hood. -Ring compressor, Blackhawk, -AAmco ridge reamer AND, about 8 or 9 blacksmith tools, that fit in the (square) hardy hole of an anvil. He threw in the 5 gallon bucket on the deal, too. I figure that the new cost of these things is in the range of $600 to $700. On another trip to the same junkyard, I bought a sorghum mill for $130. He had no idea what the heck it was--had to tell him. I was offered $200 for it by an antique dealer before I got out of the junkyard! One sold lately on Ebay (mounted on a homemade trailer and set up to power with a tractor PTO) for $1,350. Goodwill stores have been good to us, too. Most of our clothing comes from there, and LOTS of books for entertainment reading and some reference works--paperbacks are a buck (on sale this week, 3 for 99 cents), and most hardbacks are 2 bucks. Then, we take them to a used bookstore and swap out what we have for some we haven't read yet. Goodwill also had 12 volt fans for 2 bucks each--got 6 last year. They provided me with enough lamps and light fixtures to light our whole house for 2 bucks each. Those are now converted to use 12 volt CFL bulbs, and have cigarette lighter plugs on them for use with our solar system. AM/FM/SW radio, $1.50, and a 12 volt to 3 volt converter for it, $1. We'll use this on the 12 volt house system, too. New speakers for the computer, $4. Coffee mugs, 50 cents. Canning jars, $4/dozen (kinda high, but they were clean). New Alladin quart insulated mug, $1. Tomorrow, we are off to Elnora, IN, for their annual antique show and 5 acre flea market that fills the county farigrounds. I bought a lard rendering kettle there last year cheap. LINK: http://wrvaa.org/ |
