We went to Safeway yesterday, and they had off brand green beans for $1 a can. I can remember when they were 10 for $1.
Not that long ago name brand was 2 or 3 for $!.

One of the few types of coupons I bother to get from the clipping services when they come out is for canned veggies. Every time canned veggie coupons come out, sales for that brand quickly follow. That's how I still manage to get name brands for less than 50 cents a can. And not just the standard green beans, corn, and peas. I get greens, carrots, mixed veggies, and whatever other varieties I can.

It wasn't all that long ago I regularly got name brand canned veggies for 20 or 25 cents a can on sale- with no coupons!

I wish I could get stronger -- I have a dairy cow in milk that has her baby with her because when I got sick I couldn't milk her. I really miss having fresh milk every morning, and fresh cheese and butter and sour cream. Dairy is SO expensive, and if you have the fresh stuff, it really helps save on the weekly budget. I was even canning up some of the surplus milk for baking/cooking later this winter. I have 2 other cows that are due to calve in Feb or March, so hopefully I can keep Buttercup going until then. Her baby is SO huge that we really must wean him. Just don't know if I'm strong enough to wrastle a large Holstein right now for twice a day milking!

I bought some name brand coupons and the local store didn't ever put them on sale so I ended up wasting them. I would have been better off buying the veggies at the high prices. I wish the store near here was more coupon freindly.

My choices in stores here may be crummy, but at least they're predictable.

Our SAL raised the price of coffee to a dollar more. But like you say, it is still the cheapest and we really like it.

We have seen increases as much as 200% in the past year too. Our eggs were 89 cents a carton last year, they are $2.50 right now. We need to get some laying hens, these chicks aren't growing fast enough.

I feel kind of dumb. Didn't realize you can can milk. How does it taste when you open it? And BTW, I have a HUGE super tame highland cow named Buttercup. I love her.

Usually our food bills go down in the summer because we're eating more from the garden so we buy less. But our garden is all but toast this year and I've noticed food prices increasing so now we pay more than ever :-(
