What's your favorite thing to have in the garden

What food plant(s) would you not want to do without?

Marilyn 03/16/11 06:28 PM

Asparagus!!

mpillow 03/16/11 06:29 PM

potatoes and squash(winter)

Betho 03/16/11 06:34 PM

Tomatoes

7thswan 03/16/11 06:34 PM

Tomatoes. Make alot of chili,spagetti,lasagana,juice,pizza.

10kids 03/16/11 06:40 PM

Tomatoes, every year I anticipate picking that first ripe one and eating it right there in the garden.

mpillow 03/16/11 06:50 PM

I Love tomatoes...but they are harder to grow than potatoes and squash and less calorie dense and "need" to be processed...I do at least 100q a year of tomatoes...but 2 seasons ago I canned none due to blight....127 plants and not one tomato!

same here, had to buy them from the Mennonite store, it was the first time ever I experienced blight.

ne prairiemama 03/16/11 07:10 PM

Thanks!! You can add why you like it/them too if you want!

woodsy 03/16/11 07:13 PM

Corn ! A garden w/o corn ? Really ?

Spinner 03/16/11 07:18 PM

I wouldn't want to go without any of them. That's why I have so many seeds.

If I had to limit it to just a few, I'd probably choose potatoes, squash, tomatoes, leaf lettuce, and onions. That's assuming I'd still have the wild Amaranth, yucca, and other wild plants.

PlowGirl 03/16/11 08:11 PM

cabbage

whiskeylivewire 03/16/11 08:35 PM

DH tilling shirtless...oh you said food!

Potatoes and zuchinni and garlic and cucumbers for making pickles...

mnn2501 03/16/11 08:41 PM

For eating pleasure - watermelon

Because we save so much money by growing and freezing for use throughout the year -- Peppers

julieq 03/16/11 08:43 PM

Summer squash!

gracie88 03/16/11 08:51 PM

Swiss chard and broccoli raab because they grow most of the winter, and potatoes to fill us up. Also tomatoes and peppers and summer squash... It might be easier to say what I can do without :) I don't need to grow eggplant or beets.

bourbonred 03/16/11 08:54 PM

Funny, that's exactly how I planned our garden this year. What vegies would I not want to live without, and we bought several selections of those seeds that should do well in KY. I don't think I could pick just one though.

olivehill 03/16/11 09:06 PM

Tomatoes here too. We eat a lot of tomato based dishes all year round -- chili, spaghetti, lasagna, goulash, tortilla soup, salsa, pizza, etc, etc.

Other things we use a lot of: Onions, Potatoes, Green Beans, Peas, Broccoli, Corn, Peppers -- hot, bell, banana, etc., Spinach, Carrots, Garlic & Chives.

TheMartianChick 03/16/11 09:12 PM

I like permaculture so that I don't have to work so hard each year. Each year, I try to add more. Asparagus, rhubarb, mulberries, strawberries, raspberries, various mints and herbs and anything that volunteers (potatoes, tomatoes, beans, etc...).

Sunbee 03/16/11 09:17 PM

Rhubarb. It's idiot proof--at least if the idiot is me. And everyone loves it.
Jerusalem artichokes, not because I love to eat them, though they're okay stir fried with soy sauce, but because they're weather proof and can be fed to diabetics, whereas potatoes are pickier about weather and strictly limited for diabetics.
Lettuce--I love salads. (Black Seeded Simpson has done particularly well for us in several different places.)

TJN66 03/16/11 09:25 PM

Tomatoes and jalapeno peppers. Along with rhubarb. I would hate to be without them!

chickenista 03/16/11 09:28 PM

Tomatoes.
Tomatoes make everything better. You can take a cow flop and if you put it in tomato sauce I think it would be edible.
Obviously we eat a lot of tomatoes and we eat them on lots of stuff.

Veronica 03/16/11 09:28 PM

Chard. I plant it in the spring and it keeps going through November. We love it stir fried, in omelets, and in lasagna.

NickieL 03/16/11 09:40 PM

I use a lot of tomatoes, plus the seeds are easy to save. Spinach is wonderful, and so is garlic. I suppose in a SHTF situation I'd want potatoes for sure.

newfieannie 03/16/11 09:43 PM

for only myself it would be pot. chard and carrots. which are the only 3 i eat anyway. i would want my herbs like lemon thyme, parsley, oregano, dill, sage(this is what i rinse my hair in)chives. oh i dont know probably most of the herbs anyway. ~Georgia.

sticky_burr 03/16/11 10:07 PM

people are the best thing to have in the garden :D oh and memories are good grown in a garden too ;) of kids/g'kids or parents siblings cuzins or g'parents... mind wanders alot in the garden

as far as plants , might be my area but potatos if you got potatos you wont starve. but its all joy.. picking the first flavorful vine ripe heirloom tomato of the season and eating it like a apple is nice too :)

Danaus29 03/16/11 10:23 PM

Hmmm, tomatoes for sure, peas, potatoes, spinach, kale, raspberries. Dd likes her kohlrabi and zuchini. Ds likes peppers and cukes. Dh will eat anything that is on his plate, even milkweed and violets, as long as I eat it first.
After this winters experiment I won't have lettuce in the garden again. It's too easy to grow under lights in the basement and no critters can get to it before me.

Rainy 03/16/11 10:45 PM

Wow you ask a hard question..... Tomatoes because i can use them in all kinds of dishes, and okra... we love okra...

MoGrrrl 03/16/11 10:53 PM

Tomatoes are my favorite! So many colors and sizes. Every year we try different types to see what works best.

Now, if it were just for survival, I'd probably say potatoes, but they really aren't all that fun to grow.

Someone who enjoys all that work ;)

Sonshine 03/16/11 11:28 PM

Tomatoes. There's nothing better than a fresh tomatoe from the garden. I could eat them like candy.

I think potatoes are fun to grow because it's like digging for gold when you harvest them! DD4 loves it when it's time to dig them, I dig she puts them in the basket.

Pam6 03/17/11 12:14 AM

Tomatoes....then 2nd would be potatoes.

jwal10 03/17/11 12:24 AM

Tomatoes, potatoes, corn, cucumbers, zuchinni, green and wax beans, cabbage, carrots, onions, swiss chard, beets, spinach, kohlrabi....James

fffarmergirl 03/17/11 01:19 AM

Potatoes, because you can live off them almost indefinitely and they store well without processing and there are a million ways to cook them. I just ordered a whole cookbook of potato recipes. I'm trying growing them in stacked tires this year.

Tomatoes, because they make everything taste better and they're so productive.

Herbs! Herbs make regular old "farm food" taste like gourmet! Oregano grows like a weed. Basil. Rosemary is heavenly.

Winter squash - filling & delicious, stores well without processing, easy to save seeds from, prolific.

Lettuce - because there's nothing like a great salad made with herbed dressing from my own garden.

Carrots - yummy yummy yummy in a salad.

Green beans - extremely productive.

Dry beans - very filling and protein-rich.

Mustard greens & chard because they're prolific & my rabbits go crazy for them. Saves $ on rabbit food.

manygoatsnmore 03/17/11 03:51 AM

Strawberries! And tomatoes, raspberries, blueberries, rhubarb, potatoes, fresh green peas (stand in the garden eating them like candy), green beans, winter squash and pumpkins, carrots, cucumbers, cauliflower, broccoli, onions and garlic, lots more herbs,....I think it would be easier to list what I DON't like!

unregistered65598 03/17/11 10:20 AM

Potatoes, tomatoes, onions and peppers would be my first choices. If thats all I could have. We grow all of those plus, radishes, carrots, kalrabi, beets, rhubarb, horseradish, squash, summer and winter), cucumbers, peas and beans. We also have strawberries, and raspberries. I think adding herbs is something I will do this year.

Cascade Failure 03/17/11 10:31 AM

Still looking for pizza seeds. Let me know if you have any.

Potatos and spinach are tied for second.

I've tried the stacking tire method 3 times with very little success....they didn't get big enough(tubers) but the plants were huge, required lots of watering (heat from tires) and the mice were happy I made them a nice eatery!

Comfrey is easy squeezy in tires, great food for rabbits or dried as calcium source for lactating goats as well as human medicinal stuff.
