wasp, hornets and ants for the bb gun.

I have piles of three position 50' targets from the DCM for the .22, they also work well for anything, the bulls are about two inches.

coyotes, crows, stray dogs, and varmits of such for the .243 or 22-250 or what ever happens to be in the truck seat at the time.

I make my own paper targets with the heavier mil computer printing paper, and fast drying black lacquer for the bulls eye. Good for pistol and rifle out to about 50 yards or so.

Empty paper oatmeal containers work good too.

Yesterday, I was shooting at leaves that had fallen

We use pizza boxes, milk jugs, tin cans, and any kind of cardboard boxes. We have a big stump that we tack paper targets to, also. Hubby bought some orange stickers that go over previous bullet holes so you can shoot the target longer and still know which ones are yours. We also had fun destroying an old pressed wood cabinet that was beyond repairing. It made satisfying bursts of chips when shot, and stood upright for a long time considering the barrage it was suffering.

depends what kind of shooting i am doing

100 yard small bore targets for pistol at 25 yards

100 yard sight in targets if i an sighting in the one inch grid hepls with how many clicks to make to get on the bull faster

if i am quick shooting practicing target aqusition then cans , milk , jugs what ever i can find

at a feinds he used to have 200 and 400 yard gong i figured if i could ring to 200 yard gong consitenly with irons i was doing just fine an it saved running down to inspect the target

obviosly for accuracy practice try and use a target as close to competition as i can and for competition well only official targes will do

but to give you an idea for our 50 foot 22 3 position rifle the bull is just larger than a half dollar coin that is the 6 ring the 7 ring is just larger than a quarter , the 8 ring just about exactly a penny 9 is smaller than a dime and 10 is smaller than the 22 call bullet hole.

so often for 22 practice take a sharpie marker and a dime and make a bunch of dots the size of a dime thats about the right size fr 50 -75 feet i find the smallest possable target i can see clearly at the given distance is generaly the best for actual accuracy

the 10 meter air rifle targets are small you can complete cover half of the 6 ring all of the 7, 8 , 9, with a dime and 10 is a dot in the center of 9 not even a circle just a dot about the size of .07mm pencil lead if you take the dot you get the 10 for air rife and 22 scoring only 1 round is shot at each of the 10 bulls on the target sheet , there are 2 practice bulls i the center if you shoot them out of order you also loose points.
it would be impossable to score many targets if 10 rounds were fired at 1 target it would be a jagged hole

i have also got some of the orange stickers , they are nice to stick buch to a peice of card board and staple it up also if you shoot out the center of a target to put over and keep going.

We aren't very imaginative here. The range built nice targets that you slip cardboard into. We just use whatever is on hand, mostly purchases "bulleyes" targets. DH did get an over sized map from a guy at work. He prints out an updated one every so often (he needs them for his job). DH plans to take it out and have the kid shoot at it state by state....target practice and geography all in one sitting (can you tell we homeschool?).

We have a spinner, too, for the .22's. This is the kids favorite target.

Being thrifty and wanting a challenge, I use blank 8" X11" paper (approximate size of a chest shot for center of mass) on an old piece of cardboard, soda cans, metal cans, and old peanut butter jars. I hang them from limbs, stick em on the ends of small sapling limbs, and set up a 'ten pin' bowling type of arrangement on the hillside where I shoot.

Hit a target (soda can) and then hit it again as it is moving back and forth with my Browning Buckmark .22LR in rapid fire is so much fun. That and it has impressed some of the folks that I have instructed in marksmanship - they have learned to do it also. Then I twist cans 90 degrees on the end axis to present a 'new target', or tape up a new piece of paper. Anyone else use 'target patches' (or tape) to cover previous shots, and to keep from going thru so many 'factory made' targets?

I do fire from many positions, and while moving using iron/ open sights. My only complaint, is I don't have enough of a clearing for any long distance shooting. You 'can't see the forest because of the trees' up here.

Radiofish, I use masking tape to cover over previous holes in targets and black painted masking tape to cover holes in the black part of the targets and reuse them until they're pretty spent.

I think we may have learned that at USMC rifle range target detail.

You can borrow some of my clearing if you want

That's why I shoot them in an area that I don't have to worry about cleaning them up in. Hell cleaning all that up would destroy the fun of shooting them up in the first place.

Years and years ago, before too many lawyers got involved, we used to go to the town dump to shoot.

You should see what a Colt 45 will do to a porcelain toilet!
44 Mags do a fine job of busting cinderblocks too

After dark, we'd use 22's and a spotlight to shoot rats

When I was a kid we used to pin the lids off cans on the clothes line. When the lids got shot up, we started shooting the clothes pins. We only shot the pins once. A 4' 10" lady can be pretty mean when she discovers her clothes pins have no tops left on them!

Now I shoot at the leaves on trees. They don't cost anything & there are plenty of them so I never run out of targets, and if the breeze is blowing, it creates a challenge that a still target doesn't provide.

Before anyone jumps in telling me that the lead will travel, I can assure you that it doesn't travel past the hill behind the trees. It's a great spot with good visibility so is a wonderful place for target practice.

we had a few cars that were in a fire they were fun to shoot at.

got to shoot a ford fiesta once , the owner said sure it was junk anyway had been rolled and wasn't worth anythiing it was planted in the back lot of his farm
22lr is just enough to get in the door and hear the rolled down wind break but not enough to get thru the door pannel to the interrior but a 12 ga slug well ford feistas would make lousy cover in a fire fight in and out the other side of the car

Cornhusker - well if I go down the old logging road to the lookout below the house, climb up on the rock, then I do have a long distance view of Humboldt Bay and the Pacific Ocean.. I believe that the folks in the valley downrange, would not enjoy my rounds falling short of the salt water. I would need a 105mm Howitzer to hit the water from up here.

One of the many 'gun happy' shooters that have been up here, and the hillside target backstop with some of the targets on the side of the clearing in the trees. She had worked her way up from firing a .22LR to firing a .45 a.c.p. that day.

Then there is my sister whom is now almost as good a shot as Annie Oakley. She gives me a run for the money when we go target shooting. I an begining to think that her big brother the Marine, has now given her too many shooting lessons, firearms, and ammunition!

I used to have access to a Sheriff's Dept range that had a few old cars.
I had the pleasure of ventilating one with a Thompson M1928A1 SMG

Machine guns are a LOT of fun! (When someone else pays for the ammo )

We use a lot of different things, but no glass on the range. There is already enough of it from the old farm dump that was/is there.

We use old bowling pins (free from the local bowling alley)
Practice heads from the local beauty school.
Stuffed animals from left over yard sales.
I have military silhouette targets, both long and short range.
You name it as long as it isn't glass..

I never knew they were hollow until I was shooting some with a 44 Mag and Winchester Silvertips, and one didn't penetrate both sides.

I could hear it rattling around inside, so I cut it open

It DID send it flying for about 40 ft, and expanded to about 4 times it's original diameter.

I also shot an empty charcoal lighter can with a 44 Special and the bullet hit the rolled edge at the top.

The can went flying out across a field, and when I went to set it back up, I saw the can had wrapped around the bullet, and it was still caught there
