Yep doors. Have someone put screws long enough in you striker plates to reach into the framework behind the board the plates are on. A good kick will rip them right off without better screws. Also on the hinge side have them drill a nice hole in the edge of the door and put lag bolts with no heads in so when the door closes they are in the door. You can never be to safe. Is your yard fenced in? If so put alarms on all motion lights as noise will most likely cause intruder to leave. Again as others have said practice with your weapon so you hit what you want as you may only get one shot. And tell yourself if this pervert gets in your house it will be either him or you and make it be you who walks out. Good luck. Sam

And yet if you do nothing to make the windows more secure all the intruder has to do is walk over about 6 to 10 feet and smash out a window and go in that way.

I agree the doors should have good locks. I am of the firm belief that instead of armoring the entire home build one of the rooms into a safe room. Interior shutters on the windows, solid core door to that room with extra locking devices, at least a small part of that room "bullet proofed" (a closet could work for this), food and water storage, a bucket for going to the bathroom in, a fire extinguisher or 2, and your guns. It would be a lot cheaper and the entire house wouldn't look like a bunker.

IMHO a house dog that will bark beats any sensor you can put up.

Ours knows if racoons are gtting in the trash or if someone is in the drive way, and she is pretty good company to boot. I don't need her to bite somebody, I just need to know where to aim.

Between one in the house and the two you have outside you should be alerted to anything going on in time to take action?

I also have a rechargable spotlight handy, its a 1 or 2 million candle watt. I use it for when something gets into my chicken house in the wee hours of the night, but if you shine it in someones face unexpected at night they have a blind spot for several minutes.
You might also consider a stun gun for your purse, the hospital might frown on you toting a pistol in your pocket at work?

For around your place I would recommend a decent pump (Mossberg 500 series) or semi-auto (Saiga) shotgun.

Get yourself about 2 or 3 Jack Russell terriors. When evening comes, pen up all your animals and let the Jacks off their chain to patrol the yard. They yearn to bit something! Very, very little gets passed those keen eyes and ears.
