New Yorkers get ready...

Here it comes. According to the NWS, will be the worst winter storm since the late 70's for this area which is saying alot considering the storm we had in '99 during which time folks abandoned their vehicles on the expressways. Snowing already & just about 32F so the roads are getting slick. Conservative projections are for 12-20" in my area between today & tomorrow with more possible over the weekend...the weathermen call it lake effect...we call it a fudge factor so they can be wrong & still be right. Not that much snow until you add in the 40-50 MPH winds wind should generate white out conditions. Thinking power will go down between the high winds, heavy snow and icing which is likely to occur as temps hang around freezing. Wouldn't be the first time...won't be the last.

Prepped & ready to go. Lots of dry wood for the stove, feed for the critters, a stocked pantry, batteries fully charged for the PV system and portable devices and oil for the lamps. Hope to change the water in the storage containers when I get home assuming we still have power...nothing wrong with it, just rather have as fresh as possible. No power, no well unless I run the generator...yep, have gas for that if I need it plus topped off the tank in the Jeep this morning.

Definately a good chance to put all my prep efforts to good use...even if I don't need them, still feeling very comfortable that we're ready to weather the storm...sure as heck beats the alternative. Grocery stores were mobbed when I drove by last night...bet the shelves get cleaned off with all the last minute 'shoppers' today. Wishing everyone affected a safe journey through the storm.

canadiangirl 02/25/10 05:07 AM

Take Care. Sounds like you are very ready. My DH gets excited over storms so he has an opportunity to pull out his preps and make sure they all work. They've called for a few storms this winter that seem to have missed us...fudge factor here too, but always good to be ready.

seedspreader 02/25/10 05:51 AM

Heading up to Lockport today. Hoping for good weather along the way.

Cindy in NY 02/25/10 07:35 AM

Cowboy Joe - where are you located? They originally were predicting a lot of heavy wet snow for us but now we're only supposed to get rain and then maybe 2 - 5 inches of snow. We got 11" of the heavy, wet, sloppy stuff yesterday. Ever try to shovel water - it doesn't work very well!

Riverrat 02/25/10 07:46 AM

We are in the path up here as well....just not real sure what we are going to get....could be 6-8 inches of snow, or may be all rain....depends on which weather channel you listen to.....Take care for those who get hit.....

Just west of Rochester. The area has been upgraded from a 'winter storm watch" to a "winter storm warning". It's coming...just a matter of what form it takes. Heard one of the local weatherman say this morning that we should be thankful for the warmer weather as the snow, while heavier, will have less accumulation on the ground...apparently 12" at 32F would be ~36+ if it were colder. Plus, the wet stuff won't fly around as easily as the fluffy stuff in the high winds.

StephanieH 02/25/10 09:11 AM

Last Sunday we were supposed to get 13 more inches...we ended up getting rain. The rain was nice, too, it helped melt the foot or so of snow that was on the ground!

mpillow 02/25/10 09:59 AM

We are having rain and lots of it(1.5in overnite w/ more to come) here near Waterville/Augusta Maine. Just a half hour NW they have 6-8 inches of snow...

Nat'l weather service just toned off for flooding and high winds until noon tomorrow...
I can see a good part of my lawn and have plenty of mud in the pasture!

Bring in extra wood to dry by the wood stove as humidity levels are 100%...my 2yo dry wood is acting like a sponge!

Aohtee 02/25/10 10:12 AM

I'm in the southern tier, west of the Hudson River. Snowfall started about 6am and it's coming down steadily. Maybe 1 inch so far. I have about 45 minutes of shoveling to do and Tuesdays foot of snow will be off the driveway and I can sit back and see how much this storm will leave.

Cindy in NY 02/25/10 10:36 AM

Cowboy Joe - DH graduated from RIT. The winters there are BRUTAL!!

WanderingOak 02/25/10 10:57 AM

Up around Watertown, its too warm out for the snow to stick. We've had a thaw for the past few days, and probably wouldn't have any snow on the ground at all if the sun would bother coming out. I think the weather-guessers got this one wrong, at least out this way. Out-of-towners were running around in a tizzy yesterday, after the 'snow hurricane' forecast, which I think was seriously blown out of proportion. I don't think I'm going to get anything but wet today...

Winters here were a blast when I was a kid. There was so much snow during the blizzard of '66 that we couldn't open the door. Dad climbed out the second story window onto the porch roof so me & my brother followed...it was the only way to get to the doors to dig them out. All that snow made for a great fort once we got done shoveling. Doubt that will be the case today. I suspect the biggest problem will be downed power lines. Even so, looking forward to lighting the lanterns & woodstove.

Thanks mpillow for the reminder. I have some dry wood in the greenhouse (high ground) but not nearly enough. Suppose I should add more when I get home.

HilltopDaisy 02/25/10 12:38 PM

I'm between Binghamton and Syracuse. It's been snowing since 6am and we've gotten about 6 inches so far. I'm ready for Spring.....

shelfer 02/25/10 01:42 PM

I live in Orleans county. Most of my snow will be lake effect. I live 10 minutes from lake Ontario. I would like snow over rain. Rain will make nice ice in a few days.

TheMartianChick 02/25/10 02:52 PM

We've gotten about 8 inches here. It is still coming down and all of the schools were closed in all of the surrounding counties. Even I got a snow day from work. They say that the worst is yet to come. I made lasagna and cookies this afternoon. Mmmm...nothing like comfort food in a storm.

Aohtee 02/25/10 04:29 PM

9 inches here in the southern tier. The forecast is for an additional 10 inches to fall over night.

I love this advisory from the National Weather Service:

IN ADDITION...WITH A HEAVY WET SNOW EXPECTED...WHEN SHOVELING...
REMEMBER TO NOT OVEREXERT YOURSELF BY TAKING FREQUENT BREAKS.

Thanks, I'll remember that.

HaHaHa!!That is pretty funny! Who do they think needs that warning??!!??

The wind has picked up here in the last hour. The power lines had been loaded with snow earlier but the wind has knocked it all off. The temperature is starting to drop in the house, probably from the wind chill.

soulsurvivor 02/26/10 12:19 AM

I was online speaking with a friend that lives in PA close to the Delaware line and I lost her due to her power going out. This was just a few minutes ago and she had said that the wind had really picked up and was shaking the windows and the lights were flickering on and off.

Hope all of you stay safe and warm tonight.

cowboy joe 02/26/10 04:28 AM

Well, the temps never got warm enough for the 'wet' snow. Probably 8-10" on the ground but hard to tell because of the winds & all the drifting. Road crews are out but the snow is coming down and blowing around faster than they can plow. So much snow on the roads that it was coming up over my plow on the way in bringing visibility to near zero. Even moved the plow as high as it would go without blocking the lights. Had to stop twice to knock the ice off of the wipers. Never would have made it out of the driveway, let alone into work, without 4 wheel drive. Most of the schools are closed already. Expect the rest will close shortly. NWS is calling for a short break later today followed by "additional, significant accumulation" over the weekend. As Yogi Berra once said, "It ain't over until it's over..."

AngieM2 02/26/10 06:25 AM

I hope everyone is doing okay this morning. Please keep updating.

Riverrat 02/26/10 07:35 AM

Started here this morning around 5, ice pellets now, calling for rain or snow later, depends on temps. We either are going to get heavy rain or up to a foot of snow, along with the ice pellets and freezing rain. We are also getting pretty strong winds as well....coule be and interesting day and night...

woodsy 02/26/10 07:47 AM

Big storm, widespread and mixed precip, house rocked from wind last night, no school two days running, wind gusted to 132 mph on top of MT Washington in NH last night, woohoo !
Only 3 more days of crap to go.

TheMartianChick 02/26/10 08:37 AM

We had some wind but not as much as I expected. The big surprise was how wet and heavy the snow was this morning. We broke out the snow blower and used the shovels, too so that DH could get to work. Our street hasn't been plowed yet...and I don't really expect it to be. Luckily our car has all wheel drive to get through the 12 inches or so that we got. While shoveling, more snow was coming down and it was so wet that water kept running down my face and in my eyes from my hair. The snow has stopped coming down for now, but they are predicting more, so I have to go feed the chickens and quail. I was supposed to have a Section 8 inspection today for one of our rentals, but I canceled it. That house sits on a dead end street. You can be sure that it won't be plowed until this evening.

mpillow 02/26/10 08:41 AM

The wind was bad here...lost a dead elm tree that luckily hooked up on an oak tree on its way down....it would have taken out the chix coop & chainsaw shed that my car is parked beside....CLOSE CALL!

Another tree just missed the bunny shed....mostly rain here some short periods of sleet and snow that doesn't accumulate.

Surprising no power outages here. My parents lost power near Kingfield before they woke up yesterday and had already plowed by 1pm...

Aohtee 02/26/10 09:24 AM

Our county has declared a state of emergency and "asked" everyone to stay off the roads. Everything is closed, schools, banks, govt. offices. We don't have the high winds, which probably helped keep down electric outages. Not sure how much more has fallen as my house is surrounded by huge Eastern White Pines and they tend to trap the snow in their limbs and then brake and shower me with snow and limbs.
It's definitely changed from the heavy wet flakes to dry, almost granular type of snow. Still falling but lightly.

Spring is how close?

Natalie Rose 02/26/10 09:49 AM

I am in Mass but my daughter goes to school in New Hampshire and she was suppose to drive home last night to catch a flight out of Boston this morning but the weather was really bad last night.
There were trees down all over campus and they were warning students of the black ice out on the highways.
She waited until ths morning to drive home but she said there were trees down across the highways and they were detouring drivers.
We only had some rain and wind here but not nearly as bad as other parts of New England have reported.
We had a couple of big snow storms but nothing that kept us in.
Other parts of Mass are getting snow though that we haven't, my husband was suppose to drive to Athol (an 1 1/2 hours away) to pick up a side of beef on Wednesday but they had a foot of snow at that point and it was still coming down so we waited until yesterday or it would have been a much longer ride.
I am ready for spring though, my backyard is just one big mudpit.

manygoatsnmore 02/28/10 02:11 AM

How is everyone doing? Cowboy Joe, is your power still on? Sounds like a pretty good storm...we haven't had snow since before Christmas, and it's looking like an early spring here. Please don't throw snowballs at me for sayin' that, lol! :D

Bret4207 02/28/10 07:07 AM

Boy, you'da thought the end of the world was coming. We ended up with 6" of slop, wind out of the north bad enough to move my gas grill and mild temps here 40 miles east of Watertown. My inlaws near Lake George got about a foot I hear.

Pfffht! Weather FORECASTERS!

nebula5 02/28/10 08:07 AM

Down in the southern tier, we got about 20" Thurs-Fri, another 2" Saturday, and it looks like another 2" overnight. It's wet, heavy snow, but not the slushy stuff you got up north. No widespread power outages, and roads were only in bad shape Thursday afternoon through Friday AM (NY does clear roads well, at least around here!)I think they got more towards the Catskills/Albany areas.

cowboy joe 03/01/10 04:21 AM

Finally over except for the 1-2" forecast each day until Wednesday. Offiically 14"...more like 21-24" in the places without drifts before it started to melt. Lucky for us, only scattered power outages on Friday.

Warming up and the snow is starting to melt. The plow is almost worthless with this type of snow as the weight with all the water just folds the blade over. Shovelled more times than I care to think about over the weekend as the snow kept coming down.

Had to shovel a path to the barn as the snow was up past my knees. Turns out there is a 'hole' in my farm plan as I would have to skid hay on a sled over to the barn during weather like this if I ran out. Better to find out know than once I have larger livestock. No way to get a truck back to the barn with all the snow...and it will be some time before the ground is firm enough to drive across. Doable with some effort for small quantities. Putting in a road or drive would be a huge expense. Thinking a small outbuilding or a one of those 'portable' garages' (pipe frame covered with heavy plastic or canvas) near the driveway would be a better option. At least then, the hay / straw would stay dry. Still would be a bit of work as I would have to carry bales over to the main barn. Second option includes adding more storage space to the exisiting barn, then making certain enough supplies were on hand to carry us through the winter. Might be a combination of both with the portable option available just in case we ran out. If nothing else, the storm was a learning experience.

I am in Sullivan county. We got 56" since Tuesday. Luckily it is melting nicely.

stanb999 03/01/10 06:23 AM

I'm sure glad all the moisture had to go over the higher Catskills to my east. We ended up with about 6 from the first 22 from the second and another 5 or so on Saturday and Sunday. Here the storm really wasn't bad at all. We basically had snow at an inch an hour for about 20 hrs. But thats it. It could have been worse. We didn't even get any real wind.

Here are a few pics.

It's all a matter of perspective

Well, that's probably a bit of snow for most folks. Glad you all are prepped and doing well through it.

We didn't get all that much snow this time, but added on to what came earlier and remained after our January thaw, the blowing and drifting of Feb, we have basically 2' of snow over most of the area, old and settled hard, with 8-10" of fresh, heavy snow over the past couple days, with drifts 5-7' deep. We essentially have a tunnel into the garage to feed the chickens there. Most of the 6' stockade fence in the back yard is buried. If the north end of the driveway wasn't in a wind swept place, we'd have a lot more than the 3' banks on either side, thanks to a snowblower - if it had been plowed, we'd have run out of room to put it long ago.

The picture window on the front of the house is all but covered (over 8' deep), and the one to the east has a 6' drift in front of it, with a snow curl from the roof that hangs about 2', making visibility a 16" slit. Not worried, as March will warm thing up (eventually), and by May the snow will be mostly gone.

This winter is only slightly worse than the last (and I've been in the area for most of 30 years), but still an easy winter by local standards - I only had to shovel the roofs twice, so far, and I give thanks every day for that. But we're still prepped for what could come, be that another 6", or another 6'.

And where is this, you ask? In the hills south west of Buffalo.

I'd post pix, but over dialup, it would take f o r e v e r.

manygoatsnmore 03/01/10 11:32 PM

Beautiful pics! And I'm so glad it's you and not me. I'm basking in 60+ degree temps and working on the garden and orchard expansion project. I love snow...in December. Now that March is here, I have spring fever and don't want to even think about snow!
