If you could be stuck in a movie or book...

Ok, so if you could be stuck in a survival/TEOTW movie or book, which one would it be, and what character would you be?

Sorry, trying to distract myself tonight, and this was the best I could come up with.

Wildwood 10/14/08 10:50 PM

Well of course Scarlett in Gone With The Wind when she wore the drapes LOL. She may not have prepped but she sure knew how to use the resources she had. Even though she was a spoiled fru-fru type girl, she pulled herself up by her bootstraps and did what she had to do to take care of herself and her family...even those whining sisters. I don't have any patience for people who don't just jump right in and do what has to be done. DH and I both work best when we are under pressure.

Oldcountryboy 10/14/08 10:52 PM

Jeramia Johnson or Lt. John Dunbar in Dances with wolves.

Sharon 10/15/08 12:08 AM

"The Wilderness Family" series. I would want to be Skip because he seemed happy in spite of all the challenges and just took everything in stride. Yeah, I know Skip is a guy and I'm a woman, but the Mom was just way too whiny for me!

I was going to say this movie, too. But since I haven't seen it since I was a kid, I couldn't pick a character, but I remember the title all these years later. This is the movie that opened the eyes of this suburban kid that there were "better" places to live and a "better" way.

Cascade Failure 10/15/08 04:05 AM

Louis L'Amour's "Last of the Breed", main character; can't remember the name.

AngieM2 10/15/08 07:08 AM

I'm probably a more Mid- Little House type. Some civilization near-by, and some community. So I'm not as super strong on the true wilderness survivial.

(And I still say, surviving a bad divorce and no child support will teach you about modern survival  )

I would be Swan in "Swan Song". She faced so much adversity and stayed tough even though she was only a kid, became disfigured and lost everything when SHTF .

I really loved that book :) It was the first one I ever read in the survival/EOTW/SHTF genre.

fordson major 10/15/08 08:06 AM

the sacketts, tell or orrin. other one would be Mack Bolan.

Those would be my choices too....or maybe I'd just be Jeremiah's woman, hee hee.

Modern Pioneer 10/15/08 08:51 AM

I think id choose The Postman, Kevin Costner of course. Although its not the end of the world type movie, id like to be in the last of the mohicans. I cant remember his name but id like to be the indian that carried the huge war club :)

Keep your powder dry

I didn't think hardly anyone had read that book. I loved that book when I was young.

Strange Bear 10/15/08 09:49 AM

Sam or Strider in Lord of the Rings

ACountryMomma 10/15/08 10:35 AM

Frannie in The Stand I haven't read a ton of SHTF/Survival fiction, but this has been one of my top 5 favorite books since I first read it over 20 years ago.

Freeholder 10/15/08 10:41 AM

My favorite survival book is Swiss Family Robinson, LOL! I can't say which character I'd like to be -- there are only two females who really figure in the story, and one of them doesn't come in until nearly the end.

Kathleen

stanb999 10/15/08 10:47 AM

I know one.... It's not a "Modern" CHTF story but

"The 300"

The Guy, Well of course Xerxes. I mean if your gonna dream, Dream big. :goodjob:

mamajohnson 10/15/08 10:54 AM

Ma in the Little House books.
That was the first series of books I ever read... and I always felt like I was born 100 years too late!

brosil 10/15/08 10:57 AM

I'd be living in " The Village" but I'd be a secret meat eater.

Bonnie L 10/15/08 11:23 AM

I'd like to be in "Earth Abides", but I'd rather be me than 1 of the characters.

huzzyjr 10/15/08 12:01 PM

I would like to be in The Egg and I.

Madame 10/15/08 12:37 PM

Dolly Levi from Hello Dolly. She wasn't a homesteader, but she sure had a zest for life!

I enjoyed all of the Sackett stories.

Was Bolan the one with the auto .22s?

A.T. Hagan 10/15/08 01:02 PM

A hobbit in The Lord of the Rings or Swiss Family Robinson.

.....Alan.

he had a number of weapons! can't recall them all but too be that indestructible!

fretti 10/15/08 03:14 PM

Not that I want to be, but I feel like I'm trapped in the first chapter of Patriots.

I'm not a big movie person and the books I read are basically technical (how to) type. If I were trapped in any one of my books, it would be the Encyclopedia of Country Living because the author lived very near me when the first edition of her book came out (beautiful part of the country!) and because I would love to be living that lifestyle instead of where I'm trapped.

OrganicCat 10/15/08 03:33 PM

The Ancients in Stargate SG:1 (I know it's a TV show, but also has movies now!).

OR

The robotic entity at the end of A.I. (Stephen Spielberg).

OR

A Dragonrider in the Eragon series (that was alive and well)

mnn2501 10/15/08 07:15 PM

The Stand, as long as I was alive after July and getting the good dreams

ailsaek 10/15/08 09:59 PM

Am I the only one whose first thought was Gilligans Island? :D I'd be the Professor, of course.

PyroDon 10/15/08 10:12 PM

I'd be Jaxom in Anne McCafferies "The white dragon" (Pern)
or Lew Alton in Marian zimmer bradley's "World wreckers" (Darkover)

Movie wise I'll be the kid in the last scene in night of the comet
or E Estaves in Maximum Over Drive
The postman wouldnt be bad but I wasnt all that fond of any of the people in it .

Narshalla 10/16/08 02:30 AM

Almost any female character in Anne McCaffery's Dragonriders of Pern series. (Though I'd prefer to be a dragonrider, of course!)

Almost any female character in almost any of Heinlein's books (Just finished The moon is a Harsh Mistress!) Wouldn't mind being a Loonie during/after the book. Also wouldn't mind being one of Lazarus Long's g-g-g-g-granddaughters! For those of you who think he was sexist, his books show an incredible honesty about one thing -- he didn't understand women! Most man won't, but also won't admit it!

Or a female character in David Weber's Honor Harrington series, but only on certain planets!

Any Narnia character (Female here, too, sorry!)

The first three are post-apocalypse, many centuries post-apocalypse, the last is not.

I would not want to be in The Postman, mainly because I cannot believe that in a group of 50 (or more) people, there was not one of them willing to even think about fighting their "protectors!"

debik70 10/16/08 09:18 AM

I know I'm reallllllllllllly pushing it but I would love to be Brooke Sheilds in Blue Lagoon!LOL

Really? I always wondered just how they figured out the whole giving birth thing since they had been on that island for so long and the old man had died years earlier. Was it simply a matter of instinct?

I'd probably have to say Frannie in The Stand also. The one in the book, not the movie. Of course that's today, tomorrow I could change my mind. :D Actually the lady in The Mist (movie this time) but I can't remember the name of her character (blonde with the revolver in her purse) would be a likely choice too.

Id rather be the boy in Paradise
came out about the same time but the girl was Pheobe Cates

tiffnzacsmom 10/16/08 06:34 PM

I too am a lover of The Stand but I have a feeling if I made it to Boulder I would be among the last, not fond of tons of people.

Freeholder 10/16/08 06:42 PM

Okay, I like the Pern stories, too! And the Narnia chronicles, and the Lord of the Rings series -- I love Bilbo Baggins' house! If we are getting into fantasy, and choosing a place to live, I'd take Narnia, because Aslan is there.

Kathleen

reluctantpatriot 10/18/08 12:57 AM

Capt. Malcolm Reynolds in the Firefly series and Serenity movie because he inspires me to at least do something right even if it isn't always the smart thing to do. Sometimes you just have to believe in something even if no one else does.

In a way, they do live in a WTSHTF world where they have to eek out a living however they can because they don't want to submit to Alliance control even if it would be the easier choice.

Besides, it is a future world where one can have high technology yet still ride horses like a cowboy.

beaglebiz 10/18/08 05:29 AM

Has anyone read the Dark Tower books?? (Stephen King's primary lifes work).
I find Rolands world to be incredible

travlnusa 10/19/08 08:39 PM

I would want to be the main guy in the book All The Pretty Horses.
