an option for those who are not near a gym
http://www.crossfit.com/
A running forum I have been to say that this is a "grass roots" fitness group.
Their website gives you a daily workout challenge (called the DWO) that you can do at home. You do have to invest a bit in some minimal equipment (which I do not thing the group sells, but I could be wrong about that). You have to have a place to set it up, but I thought that might be an option for some of you who are just too far away from a gym to use one, and also, once the original investment is done, you don't have to keep paying anything. They give you detailed instructions for what kind of workout to do on any given day and for how to do it.
If you are more of a group fitness person, there are affiliate groups all over the country that you can access for a fee. I am going on Monday to check one out. I figure I could take the class for the basic moves (it takes a week) and then invest in the equipment over time and just do the DWO's at home on Non-running days. That way I am not committing to a lifetime of paying for it but I know what I am doing.
FYI It is really hard core, not for the faint of heart. This ain't an 80's aerobics class! L! That's good for me, because I am not that coordinated.
hope that helps someone,
Cindyc.

I just did 500 m. on a rowing machine, 40 squats, 30 sit ups, 20 push ups and 10 pull ups in 8 and a half minutes... Why did I do that again? I guess when an x navy seal says that you really understand intensity and that you do "nice work" that is probably a compliment from a person with his paradigm, huh? I always wanted to know if I had any of my dad in me. I guess I do. That makes me happy. :-)
The cross fit gym is stinking awesome! Not for the faint of heart. I probably won't be able to move my arms tomorrow. Felt like I was gonna throw up after. But I passed the test and I can join if I want to. I want to. Now I have to figure out if I can afford it. Again... this is like running. It has goals I can understand, not like those gyms with all those gadgets, or those aerobics classes that require (gasp!) coordination. Yea... this is a good fit for me.

I'm really impressed! Good for you!
And here, lil' ol' me is just dragging out my bike, ready to peddle my butt down to the mailbox & back (3 miles) for exercise.

L! To each his own, right? That sounds scary! I am still overweight enough, that I am really afraid of falling on a bike still! Have a great ride!

I'm so glad for better weather. Biking, hiking, gardening, raking rocks (yup), working my horse, house painting - anything outside - gives me exercise & keeps me away from eating.
Even though I have an eliptical walker, I just don't get enough exercise indoors. And I live too far from the nearest town to be trecking into a gym - something I used to love.

Yea, spring is so nice! Longer days make getting out to exercise easier too. We don't have a lot of light in the winter time here.
