This is a company which monitors college atheletes on their social media to make sure they don't post anything that could be embarassing to the college.
There are similar businesses that offer services to government agencies and corporations. Your employer may have given a list to one of these services so that you, and potentially hundreds more could be monitored.

Absolutely. There's at least 2 investigative agencies I've heard of that are hired by companies and corporations now to investigate and monitor the social networking and internet activities and history of prospective employees and employees that have already been hired. Rather than the companies going to all the work of going through prospects resumes and initial interviews they get the investigators to go through all of those peoples' current and previous online activities and history.
If the person they're investigating has ever posted anything online, they can find it. The investigators report back on the personal character, morals, virtues, marital status, criminal record status, debts, political and religious affiliations, the type of language they use, what their spelling and education is like and whatever else they can find that would reflect on whether or not they would be a suitable prospect for the employer to interview. There are no secrets or privacy online.
If you post stuff on PUBLIC websites why should you be surprised that someone may go look at it?
If it was posted in a private area and they found out I can see reason to be upset. But when you post stuff publicly well then it's public! For all to see!
Glenn Beck was talking about this subject on last night's show. There is no escape from it anymore...even if you are not on the web. If you're not a subscriber to GBTV, there are some clips of last night's show on Youtube.

Alan is absolutely correct. If you have paranoia over this one deserves it.

I got that google/gmail notification. I have not read all of it, but I will be looking for the how to not share. Same reason I've not joined several things on Facebook, I don't want all those apps and that new picture posting whatever site just linking and doing what it please with my information.
I am not liking it.

I have not received any google/gmail notifications. At least not yet, so I'm feeling left out of the loop.
Angie, would it be possible for you (or anyone else who has gotten it) to copy and paste the notification to show here what the notification says?
Paumon, the Dailymail news site had a story on it last night.
I/we don't use Facbook, Twitter, or any of those types of social media. About all we use is this forum and about three others, and occasionally Ebay. Seems that a simple way to avoid being investigated by whomever is simply to not use social media sites. Wah lah. Any potential employer looking for me on such a site would be disappointed because I don't exist on them. Don't use Google either, I prefer proxies. And don't use my real name anywhere. I guess an employer could use my phone number to find out who my IP is, I guess. But again, not much to discover. There is nothing posted here or elsewhere that I would have a problem with an employer seeing. I am what I am, unapologetically. But then, we've been self employed so long I don't know if I'd ever have to worry about what a potential employer sees anyway....
If I can't read what you post to your not being my "Friend" on FB...how can an potential employer read what I post?
It's kind of obvious that this has been going on since we hear so many news reports of what people are posting (and getting in trouble for). I'd just like to know HOW.
I've always been aware of the real life implications of being online, but I hid my head in the sand when it came to understanding how the info would be used to create individual profiles that are likely not anything like me in real life. It's easy to receive a mistaken identity based just on what's online. What about others who post wrong information about you? What would that do to a personal profile? And no, I really don't care to find out.
It all makes me just want to pull the plug on the old computer and take more walks in nature. Staying online can feel very self-defeating.

Lots of people let almost anyone see their pages and pictures.
Just typing a name and some other information into a search engine can pull up lots of things about people that they may not realize is drifting around out there in cyberspace
