Food dehydrators & more??????

I have looked everywhere for plans for or even pictures of solar powered food dehydrators and/or meat smokers and I can't find enough to even get a glimpse of how to build one!

I am building an outside wood fired boiler to heat the house and domestic water with and had a thought about maybe building a smoker that I could stack on top and divert as much smoke as needed to smoke meat with!
I have a fairly good supply of different thickness and sizes of stainless steel sheet metal that I have accumulated over the years and I have, well I need to buy some more stainless welding rods but I do have some left.
Does anyone have a smoker that would be so kind as to take a few pictures and post them here so I can get an idea of what I want to build!
Any other advise would be appreciated!

I will burn all types of wood in the boiler for heat, but for smoking the meat, (and heating at the same time) I would first burn whatever wood is in the firebox up completely and then clean it out really good before smoking any type of meat whatsoever!
And I have a good supply of hickory that I'd burn when smoking it, that is if I can learn what I need to in order to build the smoker and then learn how to smoke the meat!
My cousins wife Cheryl, made some deer jerky last winter from a couple deer Mark killed and that was out of sight! I have eaten all types of meat jerky all my life but none that could hold a candle to that meat!
Her only problem is she makes a marinade and soaks about 5# of meat in it for two days, in the refrigerator, mind you, but after just one load of meat she tosses it out the door!
Then she yells that she pays about 30 bucks for the ingredients for the marinade so it cost her about six bucks a bl. just to make it!
I haven't gotten it yet but she promised me the recipe for it if I build or even buy a smoker/dehydrator!
I want to build one so large that I will have to also build a platform to get up there and load it!
I am hoping to be able to smoke about 20 lbs. or even more if possible at a time!
I didn't get a bite from the last two batched she made last winter because it was all sold for $12.00 a lb. before she ever finished it!
The first two or three batches she made was just given away at a small handful per person but that was just her way of getting people hooked on it but then she got tired of cutting all the meat into the thin slices! Which I understand could be a night mare, but she is the type of person that doesn't want to be told anything about what she thinks she knows best at, which I do have to give it to her, I think that she is the best at making deer jerky in the world, but she fools with the meat so long getting each piece sliced up that before she is a quarter way through it the meat has gotten so warm that it gives instead of getting sliced!
I tried to tell her to cut it into much smaller pieces and than put it in the freezer to chill enough just to get it firm but we all know how some lady's & some gentlemen can be at times. Myself included, LOL.
Cheryl said that after she had sold all that she was going to make last winter, yet before it was finished that two different men offered her 15 bucks a lb. for it!
I know that it is against the law to sell deer meat unless it is farm raised, but, well I guess that question should be addressed in a separate thread!

Anyway, can any one help me with idea's about building a huge smoker?
I'd really appreciate any help at all.
Thanks ahead, and God speed to all

woods

as far as wood goes my old readers digest back to basics book says all hardwoods can be used for smoking.my only thought on this is i stay away from locust as the green hugh it has is the chemical that keeps it from rotting in ground.thats why treated wood has that green look as they are using a manmade version of what that chemical that is found in locust naturally.

i have used several woods for smoking...wild cherry is the best to me..its mild and sweet smoke.alder is my all time favorite but it grows in PNW and i am yet to use any of the "alders" found here locally.one found here is hazel alder but to be honest i cant get away from the sweet smoke of cherry. hickory to me is much more harsh. i use all kinds of oaks and orchard trimmings.i even read where you can use grapevines but i am yet to try that one.

the rocket stove for cooking and the old chimney with smoker are actually two seperate items.i put rocket stove under roof for cooking in the rain/bad weather/hot sun of summer.smoker is about 6ft away from it.

recipes...people get all crazy about this...lol

it doesnt need to be expensive and you can make anything you ever tasted in store.teriyaki, garlic, black pepper ,crushed red pepper, etc.i make my own jalapeno powder for the hot stuff.

a real simple one is use a seasoning salt like mortons, soy sauce, brown sugar and water.dont ask for measurement as i dont measure i go by eye...lol...plus it all depends on what your taste is do you like more or less salt etc or hotter.

you can use honey and maple syrups and then something hotter for contrast.

i recommend you do small batches first to get a taste for what you like best.

if you dont have brown sugar use white sugar and molasses as thats all brown sugar is.

PM me if you wanna see a video of a large smoker in use and how it was built. i cant post here cause he cusses pretty bad and this site wont allow it as he uses F bombs.but its one of the best vids showing a true working smoke house that is used.

Man, and Lady's too, I love you all! I truly do. I had no idea I'd get such a response to this question but you have already told me most of what I was wondering about!
If this day gets any better I think I will break down a cry! And I think that is true too!
Yesterday a man called me and ask if I could do plumbing! I still don't have a clue as to where he got my name or phone number from, unless it was an ad I ran last summer in the trading post paper here, but after talking a bit, he said he'd see about it and call me later. Actually he still didn't know my name when we hung up.
Then he pulled up in my driveway this morning and came to the door and told me who he was and he has a sketch of the plumbing he wanted me to do, so we came and stepped into what I call my office, which is really just the computer room and this will be the first piece of business that I ever did in it, but I made us both a cup of coffee and looked at the paper for a bit, and asked him a few questions that I already knew that answer to, and pondered on it a bit!
I am disabled but just as joke, I made a sign that says "Dennis' Office' and below that I put "AID STATION" because that is where I usually take care of whatever!
He said that he didn't remember who gave him my number but he had it written down for me being a carpenter/blockmason/concrete/plumber/electrician/ and welder and he just wanted to meet me!
Well, OOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHKay! So I can do all the above, but what gives here, is what I was thinking when my dog started barking to go out!
I told him I'd be right back and went to let Buddy out and when I opened the door I stopped and looked at the laid down Cadillac with the three thousand dollar purple paint job, setting on at least two thousand dollars worth of chrome and rubber!
Now please don't take me as some blood sucker because that isn't me!
I spent a half day freezing once rehanging a front door and installing a new storm door for an older couple and I thought they would have a heart attack when I said they owed me 35 bucks!
As soon as I saw their reaction, I told them to calm down now, I was just joking and I did that for a Christmas present just for them!
What was I to do? What I charged them was already a super fair price, but I could see that it was more than they could afford, so I just gave them a Christmas Present! And it was well worth it to me! heck it was nearly Christmas after all!
But anyway, I could see this man had money, and right or wrong, I figure his car came from drugs, one way or another, and out of nowhere, my mouth took over before the brain engaged and it said "yea, I can do it for $400 but I'll need a little up front to buy torch because my last one grew legs and walked off" ( which was true, as many other tools have) and up out of the chair he came and he pulled his wallet out and handed me two bills, and said there, that is half of it, say 10 in the morning be OK? I'll pick you up so have the tools ready!"
Say What? I am getting tired of saying this but again, if I'd had false teeth they would have hit the floor!
I already had something over a hundred in my pocket, and I do need a torch to finish the AC I am working on, but I wasn't going to spend it now, and surely not on his say so that I could do the job. Been there and done that. thank you very much.
OK, I'd have been happy to make $100 for what he wants done. It should take me tops, four hours tomorrow morning, but the Good lord laid that at my feet this morning!
But he didn't stop there today!
OK, as some of you know, I am working on a water powered Air Conditioner! I have a red neck model keeping it cool down stairs already but I have bought some good solid coils that together will be about 40% more efficient than a water to air heat exchanger from CentralBoiler.com You can pull it up but you'll have to talk to a local dealer to get the price, but they have a 80,000 BTU unit, P/N 109 that sells for $293.71 here! I am sure that other dealers have different prices, but to get to the point, these heat exchangers three rows of tubing down them, they are 12 3/4" x 18" x 4 1/2" thick!
On the other hand, I bought a used A-frame coil from an air conditioner that has two rows of coils on both sides, that I am mating face to face, which will be 14" x 22" and 5" thick and four rows of tubes!
And I only paid $24.00 for the coils and all I need to do is join then with a manifold on both sides but I had spent the better part of two weeks trying to find fitting that I could use on the dada danged 3/8" copper tubes with out any luck!
Well, here comes HST to the rescue! I was about to make a post on another thread when something hit me like a ton of bricks!
I am what I call, either the stupidest smart person, or the smartest stupid person that I have ever seen and I am too stupid to even know which!
I am extremely good at some things but I am a slap idiot when it comes to others and sometimes that includes failing to see what is starring me in the face, and this time it was the fittings for the AC I am building!
I have to go from four 3/8" O.D. copper tubes on both ends of two coils and make up to a 1/2" manifold and regular plumbing fitting won't do it!
yet the same thing in copper that is sized for Air Conditioners cost out the yahoo., and I am not going to pay that ten fold price. It just goes against the grain with me, period!
Well, I was about to make that post, which I never finished, and it hit me! Who said that I had to go copper to copper! Wait a minute here. back up a step and look at it again here!
Hey, 8" of 1" stainless pipe and about a foot of 3/8" stainless tubing, which is 3/8" I. D. and I can weld up a manifold and then sweat that to the copper!
Would someone please wake me up in the morning?

No, today didn't stop there! All of you fine people, and especially you, Elkhound, chimed in and truly made my day!
This type of day hasn't happened to me in a long time but i'll bet ya I have sweet dreams tonight!

But now I have some more questions. What does it take to take pictures and download then on to here! I am sure that many of you would like to see some pictures instead of hearing me run off at the mouth, so help me out here.
I can build a house from the ground up and much more than that, but this thing here, well, we have fights, LOL!

Plus, elkhound, do you live close to Elk Horn Lake? If so you aren't far from me! maybe we can get together some time! PM me if you will.

Godspeed to all

Danaus, take that book off your wish list. I am close to finishing my A/C and already a good ways on my boiler and before deer season gets here, God Willing, I will have a solar and smoker built because I want to smoke some deer meat this year!
And all of you good people here, have already shown me all that I needed to learn to build me what I wanted to build but wasn't sure that I was right!
Elkhorn, have you ever thought about writing a book on smoking meat?
You have the knowledge to do so, and there is a pretty penny to be made by sharing your talents and the thing about it, is you strike me as a person that could care less about the money, but what is odd now days, is if it doesn't cost $15.95 for the book, no one takes your knowledge seriously!
Now I am not one of those people, mind you. Just saying that is the way people are today and another thing, is that you also strike me as a person that is fast to learn a trade, whatever it might be!
I have followed you a lot here, or I should say you seem to be a step ahead of me on all the threads, LOL.
Anyway, danaus29, I think you would do well spending the $15.95 on materials instead of the book and listen to what Elkhorn has to say!

Godspeed to all

i am just a poor peasant living a simple life who likes to do and snaps pictures and shares and shows what he is doing...the good, the bad and the ugly and sometimes all at once....lol.

there are people here that do way more than me. i just like to ramble on here to get ideas and to farther my ideas and thoughts along with others ideas and their doings.often others here have helped me when they showed something or talked about .often times i do blends of things between my ideas, what i read and others ideas and i take elements that i see that i see i wanna try or incorporate in any project i am doing.

oh and i am real bad about posting youtube videos....lol.
