Finding motivation in a little game.

Yesterday, I was severly lacking in the house cleaning motivation department so I played a little game with myself. I asked myself- if I lost power right now what would be the most pain in the tush things to take care of without power? While playing the what if game I got this done:

Filled all my drinking water pitchers. (one cold, one warm, one for dogs)
Made juice.
Washed all my dishes.
Caught up on laundry.
Vacuumed all the carpets.
Printed off some info that I have on my computer to put in my good stuff to know notebook.

Not a whole lot, but considering the alternative would have probably been none of that I feel pretty good about it!

Really ironic thing is that today my power DID go out! A truck hit a power pole on our road and knocked the lines down for about 2 hours. Of course I didn't know what happened right away so I wasn't sure when it would come back on and that set me thinking about what else I should have done yesterday! lol

I love your "game." We all need motivation every now & then! These are things I do everytime I hear it may be going to snow or come an ice storm, too.

I think I'm going to have to do a bout or two of the game... one for house, one for sewing room.

I definately do it before a storm but yesterday was lovely, sunny and over 50* but the carpets were still dirty! lol. Storms and such that you can see on the horizon are easy (for us) to prepare for but today was a reminder that you don't always have that notice.

In a long term power outage situation I know that some issues- like dirty carpets- are going to be less important than other things, but knowing that I won't have to deal with general housecleaning going into an emergency is certainly motivating for me.

I really like the concept of making it into a game. Anything is better when it becomes a personal challenge or game. It's a good way to involve others too by asking them to "pretend" with you. It's a concept to keep in mind following disasters and facing major challenges. Keeping a good attitude can be life saving.

that's a good way to approach 'lack of motivation'.

I get it alot. It does help to make a self challenge.
Looks like you did quite a bit; some days just to get one thing completed is a good day.

Wow - I am going to do that. I do just that when storms are coming so why not do it at other times? Usually it forces me to get all the laundry done, dishes done and floors mopped at least. Gonna clean today and I will do this.

Angie I would shake up that order: Sewing room then the house

Good for you , I didn't have the motivation to clean yesterday-otoh I did make a game of what ifs....I got our GHBs ready yesterday. I always use to carry an emergency bag in my car when I worked, but since I retired last July I took it out of the car. DH and I rarely go anywhere so haven't thought about it much, but every now and then I would get a nudge but never follow through...but today I did. We only live about 10 to 15 miles from the nearest town which is not a lot compared to others, but there is no way I could walk it home in a day, so I also prepared us for sleep or resting a long the way.

I told DH we are prepared here at the farm...but what if we weren't at home one day and something happened. I had to order a couple of items off line, but I think we are good to go. Now if we can remember to switch the bags when we switch cars...lol The main car we use is mine...so that is where I will leave them, but occasionally we use his and the truck..

So I feel at peace now..

As I've read here before, WTSHTF can be very personal. Glad you were prepared. Guess I should get off the computer and put a load of laundry in

I'll wash the dishes or vacuum during a TV commercial if I am watching a movie. You would be surprised how much time a commercial will give you to work.
