has anyone heard odd noise
ok I know about the silly you tube vidoe of the strange sound and this is not that nor a hoax. I live about a lil over an hour drive from a mil base but with alot of woods between here and there. I have my dh working there and there is no odd noises. At varying times of day and night i here this repetative banging, Almost liek when a truck dumps a load and the door swings back against the metal. It is not a truck doing that. I live in the woods and there is no construction. Has anyone heard this? I also hear what sound like a canon , I know noise travels and depending on the wind barometric pressuer etc but it is always in the same direction that it comes from and it never comes from the direction of the base. that is the best way that I can describe it. Hope I am not alone in this as this has been going on for about a year....thanx.oh and at times the ground shakes with no noise. and other times I feel a vibration in the ground. I can say the noises sound very close lie maybe a few acres away and yet there is nothing around me that I would be able to hear along the lines of logic. no construction ( would not happen at 2 a.m. anyway. no major highwaythat I could here....just wondering if amyone else has heard anyting

Hi justincase and I'm sure you've heard the old saying "misery loves company". Well you can take some comfort from the fact that "mystery loves company". Much of southeast Ky has been reporting these sounds back in December and as recently as Jan 23, 2013. It's enough people calling in to make it into the local newspaper headlines. Nothing ever gets answered, just more speculation on what it could be.
Ky is still in a series of small quakes being registered on the USGS and some think these sounds are associated with that. I don't know but both my husband and I have heard these noises and it's very unsettling for us old hunter types to be faced with something like this we can't easily explain. That metal sounding noise is the one that really puzzles DH and it makes him angry that he can't find out what's doing that. The boom sounding noises don't upset us so much because we've both grown up listening to Ft Knox artillery going off. We're about 60 miles southeast of Knox.
Editing to add that if the boom noises are associated with Ft Knox, then they have new and bigger stuff to detonate. As far as I know they're not taking any official credit for being the source of that noise.

I wonder if maybe some piles are being driven into the ground somewhere?

Any oil fracking going on in your area? That sounds like what happened here a couple of years ago, which was followed by small earthquakes. They say it doesn't cause the sounds or the earthquakes, it's all just a coincidence...yeah right, lol.

I used to think the 'boom' was just a hoax.
Folks report all over the plaec about the 'boom'.
Until I heard a boom.
It was about a month ago and there was double boom so loud and hard that it rattled the windows.
It was heard by folks over 10 miles from us too.
It fit the other reports from all over the place for several years now.
And nothing locally happened that would explain it.. no explosions or derailments or anything.
Just the 'boom'.

Could some of the "booms" be high flying jets going sonic?

Munitions from the base. I live 10 miles from a CFB, and these noises are common during munitions training. Often, it feels like the sounds, vibrations and bangs are coming from a direction other than the base, but it's not -- something to do with the atmospheric pressure, I understand.

I haven't heard any booms myself, but several local friends heard one a few weeks back. They thought it sounded like someone's gas line blew up their house. But no fire trucks ever raced down the road.

Yes, I have been hearing them for 1 year in NE Ohio. I didn't notice until I moved the head of my mattress right up next to my screened window. Heard them all summer long when I laid down in bed at night when the window was open.
Funny you say it sounds like a loud dump truck door swinging back and hitting steel with a loud BOOM. That is exactly how I described it. I have lived here on and off since childhood and never heard these noises. There is nothing new in the area to cause them out in the country.
A friend of mine said she was hearing loud booms in southern Wisconsin a year or so ago, and I didn't think anything of it until it started here on a nightly basis.
I think the best way to describe it would be a crane dropping a large log into a thick steel freight train.

No but two mornings in a row an unmarked helicvopter buzzed my house last week. I went over 4 times one morning & hung right over top for several minutes. It was so obvious that a neighbor asked me what they were looking for!

are there any air operations at the base, justincase? it could be bangers and air guns used to scare birds out of the way for aircraft to take off or land. lots of airports use this, i think some military bases that have air operations use them here in Canada. the vibrations i don't know maybe munitions disposal in covered pits?

yes I do hear it
Wow, Justincase, when I got to your description of the sound, the hair on my arms stood up! That is exactly how I described to DH. I am just west of Wilmington and hear this frequently at night. I've asked neighbors but it seems like anything unexplained falls back on it must be "Seneca Guns". We are the only people around that sleep with a window open most of the time and they just shake their heads at the crazy Yankees, lol. My son is up at Cherry Point he said they hear things all the time on base and he figures that what they don't tell them he probably wouldn't want to know!
So I have no answers but can assure you that I have heard the noises too.

If you go on youtube and search for "earth groaning," I think it is, you can hear the sounds a lot of people have recorded.

Have heard it here in the PacNorWest as well. I called 911 the first time and they called back (!). We live near the Bremerton Ship Yard, 911 said they called over there and the shipyard said they did nothing. 911 also said they sent out cars and there was nothing they saw.
This happened over several months last summer. I'd call 911, they'd send out cars, and call back with 'nothing in the area'. Friends from several miles away also heard the noises. 911 said many people called them about the noises.
Still unexplained.

A couple of summer's ago, there was an area in Wisconsin where the people would hear these noises at night. The one thing that authorities came up with was it could be small earthquakes. I don't think too many people believed it was small earthquakes.

We live 70 miles from a military base (Camp Ripley). At the base they often train with various artillery and tanks. We can hear distant "thunder" when there is not a cloud in the sky and realize it is Camp Ripley.
Where I work, it is only 35 miles from Camp Ripley and their artillery training will shake the fllors and walls of our office building.

That might explain daytime noise, but she said it happens at night too
