Foods That Will Win The War And How To Cook Them (1918)

This book is from WWI. It is free, and I thought my S&EP peeps would enjoy it.

Dang it, my whole long novel of a post disappeared somewhere
Probably just as well.

I grew up on those recipes and incorporated them into my kitchen practices. My elders still can remember those times. They are late 80s/mid 90s and some of the stories are either hair-raising or so sad I wonder how they were able to go on.

Great post, I saved it to print. Thanks Common Tator

One of our favorite family recipes is Meat Pie. A recipe my Great Aunt created with items that she could get with rations from WWII.

Cool find! Thanks for sharing. I saved it for further study.

Found it very interesting that in the sweets section they called for using corn syrup. Is that the same thing as the high fructose corn syrup that so many have their panties in a wad about today?? I didn't realize it went all the way back to the 19-teens, thought it was a more modern development.

Two differant things.

High fructose corn syrup goes through many stages of production, corn syrup is a lot more basic

It probably was just regular corn syrup. I think the high fructose thing is the more recent part, but who knows? I like that many of the recipes are general. They dont say 'olive oil' they simply say fat. Use what you got in other words. I like that, as I am not a recipe follower.

I really appreciate all of the very frugal suggestions. And I love the patriotism of people doing with less at home to help win the war!
