Herbal Medicines

I'm interested in learning more about how herbs can be used as medicines. Can someone steer me in the right direction to help me learn more about it. I know almost "0" about it now. Thanks very much!
JK.

I eat a lot of garlic and onions. I also use Echinacea when needed. Don't know anything about the rest--someone else will.

Elderberry syrup is great if you take it as soon as you start feeling a little under the weather during cold and flu season. And it is super easy to make.

So where do you get all this at. I.e., elderberry syrup? I don't think I've ever heard of it?

I will try to send you some book titles: Practical Herbalism comes to mind first. Depends on what you want to do. If you are just looking for herbal remedies, the ...books by Balsch (sp) 'Nutritional guide to healing'??? are good. But if you want to grow your own, you need books like PH and field guides. What are you looking for exactly?

Did somebody say elderberry? Lol, my friends call me the elderberry queen. I'mtyping this on a cell phone and I can't get it to copy n paste links, etc. or else I would... but the next best thing I can do is to direct you to my old blog (link is in my signature line at the bottom of my post). Look under "Remedies That Work" on the left side of the page for the article "Everything you wanted to know about elderberry....."

(The page needs to be in full web version, mobile viewers: see bottom of home page to toggle into web version.)

For those who are not in a position to grow or wildcraft herbs, a good inexpensive place to order from is www.herbalcom.com Decent quality herbs, good prices, good service and free shipping.

Seconding the book Practical Herbalism. Easy to understand, use- very worth the money. when we have new missionaries come through the church hubby pastors going to a 3rd world country, this is the book I most frequently give out. Check out Bulk Herb Store - Herbs, herbal books, remedies, and articles for good books, and loads of great information.
Cajunsunshine, I order from herbalcom, but wondering about their herbs from China and other countries that have no control over pestisides, etc. At least in our country there are rules- have you looked into this?

Herbalcom also sells Certified Organic herbs, which are naturally my top choice. Some of my other suppliers, such as Frontier Herbs and Starwest Botanicals also offer Certified Organic. The catalog listing shows the country of origin as well as the Certified Organic label. Some herbs are not listed organic, but are listed as Wildcrafted. Other herbs are not organic but are grown under acceptable conditions by known growers.

All three are respected names in the herbal world, along with others such as Mountain Rose Herbals, etc.

(Budding herbalists should be aware that there are a few less than desirable herb suppliers out there. Ask around and stick with well established and trusted names in the business.)

I found the following article very helpful. It is packed with basics and gives a list of reference books.
How I Stock My Natural Medicine Cabinet
Hope you find it helpful too! Have a great day.

InHisName, thanks for the link for the Bulk Herb folks. They also have a great selection of books, including the Peterson Field Guide. It is one of my favorite guidebooks for positive identification of wildcrafted herbs.

Speaking of wildcrafting... Those who are new at this, please be aware it is easy to make serious mistakes. There are enough poisonous look-alikes out there that it would be a good idea to learn under the watchful eye of an experienced wildcrafter.

Another option would be to grow your own. Horizon Herbs (in Oregon) sells seeds for an incredible variety of herbs. www.horizonherbs.com
