Wheat Flour

I came across some wheat flour my boyfriend had stashed in the cupboard. Not sure exactly how old it is, I have been here since April, so I know it's at least 5 months old. He thinks maybe it's been a year. Can I put it in the freezer to kill any bugs and save it? I don't see anything crawling around in it.

I would smell it to make sure it isn't off. Then put it in the freezer for a bit and you should be good to go.

Whole wheat flour smells "off" when it is stale. It's probably safe to use if it is stale, but your baked goods will taste off.

Whole wheat flour can go rancid, too, and it is rancid, I'd throw it out.

If it smells OK, it is OK.

I ended up throwing it all out....the flour that was in a canister smelled very rancid and the flour that was in the store bought bag that had not been opened had black bugs in it when I was checking it out. From now on, I will just store it in the freezer when we buy it in bulk. Thank you for your help!
