Exclamation Stock up on peanut butter!

From the Farm Press website:

Not only is this year’s [peanut] crop one of the smallest on record, but yields are expected to be below average. As of mid-July, only 30 percent of the crop nationwide was rated in good-to-excellent condition.

Thanks for the heads up. I need to go back through and figure out how to re-can (into smaller jars) the larger containers of peanut butter. I also don't like storing peanut butter in the flimsy plastic jars they initially come in from the stores. I'd rather pressure can them into pint mason jars. Just need to go back through my canning files and find out the mines/lbs of pressure.

I try to act on gut feelings so when our store had the large jars of peanut butter buy one get one free I bought 4 and got 4. I bought some a few months ago, same deal smaller jar and had not run out yet but didn't want to run out.

My kids love peanut butter cookies and we dip our apples into peanut butter too. Thanks for the heads up, think I will go buy more at another location that has it on sale pretty close to the BOGO deal.

Thanks for the warning. I did get 12 jars Peter Pan on sale recently (and w/coupons) but they are the small jars. I will have to keep an eye out for another sale. DH takes PB&J in his lunch for work and I like it too.

Hmmm. I guess I'm going to have to bite the bullet and see if my blender can handle making peanut butter. I've been putting it off, but now seems like a good time. We don't eat the commercial stuff with the preservatives; there's a place here that has a grinder where you can grind your own fresh. But if prices go up too much might be better to stock up on some peanuts and grind it at home.

My gut tells me 'canning' peanut butter isn't really wise for home canners.

sidenote: I tried raising peanuts this year, and had a good crop going... the plants were setting 'nuts' about the time the drought killed everything... irrigating couldn't save em...

Our family goes through a lot of peanut butter. The kids consider it a food group all on it's own! I will be looking for good deals on it in the next few weeks so we can get stocked up. Thanks for the heads up!

Thanks for the tip - I'll be stocking up this week. We eat lots of peanut butter and can't have enough on the shelves.

I personally get the kind in glass jars that has NOTHING but peanuts and salt. Organic when possible.

There's a little health food store where you can grind your own, but OUCH! They are EXPENSIVE!
