BEAR !!!!!! and fierece storm, oh my

DH went out to check on his beehives past horrible wind storm Sunday night...more on that later. Anyhow, they were strewn all over, smashed with claw marks...definitely a bear Called the conservation officer and they came a running. Those 8 colonies a total loss but another in the orchard just got blown over in storm. So they loaned us solar charger and wire to electrify the bears next honey adventure. If a zap doesn't work we get to use the rubber bullets and last resort is trapping the bugger. Well, no honey crop this year. Did put a couple of trap hives as one cluster of bees found. Alot of $$$ lost. Must have happened during this last week. I sure wouldn't have been so bold out walking if I knew we had company! Our Pyrenees Maybelle always goes with us though...she is very protective of us and the farm.

Sunday nite we have a huge wind storm. ..60-70mph straight line winds. I watched with the lightning flashes while it totally destroyed my greenhouse. Many smashed trees on houses, cars, roads. Roofs gone. Bldgs. caved in. We lost a ton of shingles. Just got our power on after 23 hours without. Only blessing was the temps were in low 70's. Debris everywhere to clean up. Literally blew the leaves off plants in the garden. Volunteer fire department on our road for hours opening up the road with chain saws. Wicked lightning and a firetruck parked in front of our house for hours.

We actually did pretty well as pioneers. Had plenty of stored water...a stove top percolater--most important-- and finally this afternoon cranked up the generator as electric co-op was not promising to get the lights on today after all. Discovered a big lack of batteries for flashlight and the weather radio. Only had radio a couple of months so didn't expect those batteries to be dead. We are really in a dead zone for weather coverage so when the weather radio says the name of our town we get scared....since all that is here is a church and graveyard. Small small crossroads really. One man killed when tree fell on his car.

Neighbor had a downed honey tree so will go over tomorrow and see what's what. Says there is alot of honey. The blown down hive was enough for us...had to wear all the gear 'cause they were royally peeved. Usually Pa only wears a veil, hates gloves and the full suit never. Only got stung twice.

Glad you came thru it alright except for the hives and greenhouse.

We had quite the light show from that same storm and some rain but nothing severe.

If it's a nuisance bear, you're not allowed to kill it? I'd worry about my kids, small livestock, the dog on his chain, etc. with it marauding around.

Sorry about your loss - that must be heartbreaking. And that sounded like a tornado, not just a storm!

they've actually had spotting of bears in the next town over from us. Sorry about your hives. Those straight line winds are rough....they totally destroyed my corn this year.

OMG Mutti! Exciting and scary all at once. As I recall you live in the Rolla/Ft Leonard Wood area right?

Bears are way more than I want to deal with. Sorry to hear of the damages from the winds and I hope everything gets back to normal soon for you.

It was in 2009 when a black bear visited our neighborhood. It was finally caught and released elsewhere. To my knowledge our area hasn't ever had a bear here prior to that incident.
