Are you in shape.....
.....for an emergency? My neighbors had a fire yesterday near their cattle barn, they do not live on their ranch they live 20 minutes away. So I see the smoke at daybreak when I was out feeding and got DH. The barn is on the back of neighbor's property their entrance is about a mile away on a different road, their barn is about 600ft from our back pasture. So we ran over to get the neighbor's tractor and equipment out of the barn and called them and 911. I had to run about another 600-800ft to close a gate to keep the cattle out of the barn area, DH ran back to our place to get his truck to go around to the neighbor's front gate to let the fire dept. in! Fire was sucessfully put out with no losses of equipment or barn! DH and I are in pretty good shape, we work hard and are relatively healthy, BUT all the running wore us plum out!!! I'm not in as good of shape as I thought I was, I'll be working on that!!

If an alien donut species lands on the planet tomorrow and tries to take over, I'm fully prepared to end the threat singlehanded.

yep i am in shape.... hey round to oval is a shape right?
the tiring part that hit you in your running around is the adrenaline rush going away, while your body was pumped up on it, you felt nothing and probably coulda lifted the tractor out of the barn without driving it and not hurt yerself [dont ry it, just saying thins happen when pumped up adrenaline kicks in]
It happens to the best of us no matter what shape we are in, the brain will have the body do things for the time frame needed if you dont think about it....
and the soreness sometimes is ther and soetimes is not after such eventful happenstances.
Ernie, i would be there beside ya for repelling those alien doughnut species, hopefully they would be the ones from gamma quadrant and be frosted.

I guess it sort of depends on what the state of the emergency is.
If it involves running, then no. Old injuries prevent me from moving just super fast and years of smoking have taken their toll on my cardio.
If it involves carrying something heavy on my back like a pack then I'm ok up to about 100 pounds. After that it would cut into my "miles per day" overland travel.
If it involves shooting or stabbing then we're in good shape.

No, Im badly out of shape & Im not looking forward to what I have to do to correct that.
A few years ago I had some rather severe health problems. I wound up hospitalized with amongst other things Edema at near 400pds, Im only a 5'5 female.
The problem started with an incorrectly diagnosed hip problem.
The doctor I was seeing didnt put any real time or effort into finding out what the problem was.He gave me some lame catch-all diagnosis like RA, & said there wasnt much they could do. So as the pain got worse I staid off it as much as possible got depressed, didnt take care of myself at all, which led to some other health problems, & finally the edema. Most of my life Ive been a very, if not overly active, physically healthy 125 pd.
Turns out, I got a fracture from a fall off a horse, & about that time, my hip started to disintegrate. Its some kind of bone problem. I think he called it articular necrosis.
Through restricted diet, & medication I got my weight back down to 125 pds, where my body is used to & am waiting on a hip replacement.
I can get that when I want it, my doc, at my request, has started the process of lining me up with a surgeon, & has told me to start exercising now, if I want a speedy recovery
I swear, I think Im allergic to the mere thought of exercise.
I want the pain to stop, Im not really looking forward to going through all of this..

Just fine, I do a lot of cycling, hiking for hours, and even running down to the river and back to get in some fishing. I probably could run 2 miles without suffering much, more than that, I am taking the motorcycle anyway.

I can do very VERY short burst of extreme, but I'm more of a marathon guy than a dash guy. Not just running, I mean that for pretty much everything.
That said, I can keep up a high level of strenuous exercise for a lot longer than I should. Problem for me is while I'm moving I don't realize that I've past my limit. Once I stop... I may well drop dead....lol

Like most decent shape guys I am built for the long haul now at 48. I can put in a 16 hour day of construction work but running fast the kids win every time. I think it is evolution. The younguns have to be able to run to survive and the older ones have to stay around to defend. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
I am also a menber of the Donut Defense Militia, and take the constant training regimen seriously.

No! But we are working on it steadily! I think being in good health and in good shape is an excellent prep!

If it's my kids in trouble, I'd probably get done what needs to get done, then collapse in misery and be sore for the next week. If it's anything else, I'd do what I could, but sure couldn't do that much running!

You don't have to be the fasted one, only faster than the slowest one.

Don't underestimate the toll coming down from the adrenaline rush takes on your system. Coming off a real good adrenaline high can make you tired in and of itself.
As for being in shape. Meh. I'm not as in shape as I once was by a long shot, but more in shape than I was at one point too. I'm working on being back in (actually even better) shape though. Got a marathon in my sights. I'll get there, hopefully by early next year.

I'm in much better shape than I was a year ago, but I want to be in better condition than I am now.

There's a marathon in my future too. I only recently learned they were still making those candy bars...

I am badly out of shape, and have a damaged back and knees but can move surprisingly fast in an emergency sprint. Even when I was in very good shape, and before the multiple car accidents, I never was much of a distance runner.
Last summer I had a dog jump the fence and latch on to one of my goats. My younger sister who is in good shape was surprised to find that not only had I run up the hill just as fast as she had, but also jumped the fence into that particular pasture in the process. Once the adrenaline wore off I was shaky and sore, but I saved the goat!
