Any S&EP resources for the deaf?

My wife is deaf. Deaf folks communicate differently than hearing folk. I'm trying to explain to her the seriousness and importance of preparing for what is coming but I could use some help. She was raised Mormon so that helps somewhat.

Does anyone know of any resources for the deaf that deals with this topic?

Thanks.

Well I believe that you and her have a strong asset. A silent communitcation that many do not know. I will not insult your wife but I assume she reads. Has she join the group here? It is non vocal but tons of advise and guides and always a person to interact with. Why do you not introduce her to us if she is not a current member. We could welcome her and answer her questions or at lest someone here is going to have a lead for her to find the info for herself. HT is the best education I have every gotten.

tinknal - we would love to have her here, and no one has verbalized anything.

How about some of the books recently talked about? And Alan's website?
Since she's of Morman background, she may teach us a few things.

And has she read about this latest government shut down scare and how it could impact many with a ripple effect on small businesses, etc.

Do tell her we extend an invitation to join in and ask her own questions.

If nothing else, she could be really ready for bad weather, or power lines going down (people do hit them things with cars from time to time).

I'm trying to get her involved and she has looked at the pages here.

She is very bright but she received a really lousy education at a state school for the deaf. Her reading and writing skills are not so good. The school basically spent most of the time working on lip reading and speaking and not much time on anything else. She didn't even learn sign until later in life.

My sister, 51, is deaf. She lost her hearing when she was 13. Doctor's and specialists said to keep her in public school and teach her to lip-read. Don't indoctrinate her into the deaf world. I think she should have known both worlds. She never did learn to sign and just received a so-so education.

My wife is the same age. That was the prevailing thinking of the day. While speaking and lip reading is a valuable tool signing is much more of a complete language. Too much room for error in lip reading.
