fuel storage

Just a tip for storing fuel on the cheap: Semi trucks have very large tanks. They are typically made of aluminum and come in sizes of 50, 75, 100, etc gallons. These trucks typically do not last many years before they are junked.

Buy these saddle tanks for storing gas or diesel. You can get some serious bargains.

That is a very good ideal. I would suppose you could hit the salvage yards and look for wrecked trucks and get away with one or two very cheap. Problem for me would be coming up with enough money to fill one up.

BP has had this deal going on that with every eight gallon fillup you get this scratch off card with a code on it. Get five cards and you go to their website and enter then codes then they'll send you a $10 gas card.

We've been steadily using this since the program started and already have fifty dollars of gift cards and expect to get at least more before the program expires (end of March?).

This is going to go a long way towards filling up the new fuel drum I'm buying this weekend to double my storage.

I saw this, but never filled it out. I go to BP often enough that I probably should. I usually put in between 14-17 gallons at a time though so I'd need to start getting gas les often and only a half a tank

The above ground diesel fuel tanks for farms can be had for pretty reasonable. Then you just get the delivery truck to come out and fill the tank for you.

Ours has a lock on the tank, and then you need electricity to run the pump and the electricity is also locked up. The tank isn't where you could see it from the road.

If you think you will be without electricity, you can get a barrel pump and pump the fuel out the fill neck of the tank. Oh, yeah. You can buy used 50 gallon drums for fuel and take those in the back of your pickup and fill them with diesel, too, if you don't want the delivery driver coming out to your place.

Thanks for a good tip... I bought a 500 gallon diesel storage tank at a farm auction but I need something to store gas for my gas tractor and one or two of those would be perfect. Maybe stick them on a little trailer and with a hand pump it sure would beat pouring all those 5 gallon cans.

Doesn't HAVE to be two different trips.

Rules on the pump say "buy 8 gallons, show receipt to clerk inside"....in fact, it doesn't even say YOU have to do the buying !

I always pay with a BP credit card ( which gets you ANOTHER 5% off the pump price, by the way). My truck holds 34 gallons. I wait until I'm down to 1/8 tank, then put 8 gallons in....stop....take receipt from pump....start again....fill 8 gallons....stop....start again, finish fill up.

= 3 receipts of 8 gallons ( or more ).

THEN as you pass the other pumps, keep an eye out for receipts sticking out of the printer slots.....lot of folks just fill and drive off leaving their receipt. Easy to find one more, and it usually has 8 gallons on it....present all to the clerk, who could care less how many you have....they have a BOX of these cards to get rid of....and collect your 3-4-5 cards.

The bigger PITA is scratching off the front, then entering the 10 digit/letter code, which you can barely even SEE if you scratch too hard, into the website list. No, they don't intend to give up their 10 bucks TOO easy.....

Cheapest way I've found to store fuel is FREE 55gal drums.

Many industrial places ( I get mine from a pallet/sawmill operation down the road ) get motor/trans oil in 55gal drums, and the oil company that delivers these often don't want the drums back, they are a disposal problem to them, as it costs more to ship back empty than the price of a new drum.....so they pile up at the end user's place of business, who is happy to part with them.

I take then home, put a GOOD coat of paint on them ( the original paint is thin and cheap ), and built a special pallet for my drums.

Also found some stainless steel drums on Craig's List recently.....25 bucks each, but we're talking a FOREVER drum here !

This is the twenty first century. Between the wife and I we probably have half a dozen e-mail addresses even if we only use one or two of them regularly.

Really good deal. Round here we pay about $30 for an empty 55 gal drum.

Yeah....I got that......but they have to send the gift card to a PHYSICAL address, and that is limited to 3. How's that working ?

Check industrial places around.....you might find them free like me. Just make sure they didn't have McNasty stuff in them before

We'll have to think about it for a few minutes after our twelfth card comes in.

So they've sent 11 cards to the same physical address?

Not trying to give you a hard time, but I'm wanting to know before I submit my 4th one.

No, we're playing by their rules. Exactly what they have stated as their requirements as to e-mail addresses, physical addresses, and names. Think about it.

Now you have given away the location of your house !

The drums(55 gal.) around here are as hard to find as hen's teeth. Got a buddy that works for the oil company looking out for a few but no luck so far. At one time they were charging a deposit of $20 per barrel. Not a lot of industry around here any more. The SS barrels would be to die for.

Found a local station trying to sell a 500gal. diesel tank and electric pump for $800 this week but thought that was a little steep.

I have been working on a short term storage this week to get everything out of the shop for safety. (will post in another thread when I get pictures together)

For 55 gallon drums try a car was for plastic, yes they work, or your town barn for metal. Paint comes in the metal drums and washes out with water. Of course it needs to be wet to wash out. I have a few of them with the bands and lids waiting for dry ice and grain. Not sure how well they would work for gas but this is an inventive group so probably could be modified to work.
