Gun Laws?!

Went to Grampas today and he was saying that we need to get guns now, no surprise there, but he was saying there are laws in Cali that restrict or take away the citezen's right to bear arms?! WTH?!

Is this true? I thought we have the constitutional RIGHT to bear arms?! Any input?

constitutional RIGHT, what do you thing this is a free democracy..

California has lots of gun laws and while many dont out and out stop you from having a gun they severely limit you. Also the ammo, No lead in your bullets. Type of gun, size, calibre. You need what is effectly "CARB" approved guns

Since is sounds like your not familiar with guns, Is suggest taking a NRA gun safety course and finding a local gun club. They can help you with the local and state laws.

add 10 round magazine limit , no 50 BMG , registration , permits , waiting periods , you can still own a gun but they want to know about it and tax you for it.

and they don't want competition when it comes to who has the bigger gun or bigger mag

He may be talking about the new California ammo registration law. You need to show id and be finger printed. It was tried in a couple of cities. They figured out it was a useless, expensive program. No crimes were ever solved by this.
Even with this failure. State gov passed a state wide ammo registration law. (law # AB 962)Now a number of internet sellers have quit selling ammo in Ca.
NRA magazine has an article in detail about this.

When it comes to guns some of us live in freer states than others.

This is an example of what you can still buy (2010) in the People's Republic of Kalifornia (PRK). Tell Grampa to relax. On the other hand, that is a good excuse though to go get a new toy. Maybe you can get Grampa to pay for it?

An AR just doesn't look right with those stumpy little mags
You guys have to have bullet buttons too don't you?
Also, as I understand it, CCW is almost impossible in some parts of California, and each CCW must list the gun you are planning to carry?

No offence, especially since I'm new here, but that AR isn't the same AR I can buy here in FL. I don't have to have a bullet button on mine, I can have a collapsable stock, flashsuppressor (anyone who does any lowlight/night firing know this is useful), regular capasity mags, and just for the heck of if a bayonet lug. All of which I put to use on my gun except for the bayo lug.

In Taxachusettes We can only buy what the Attorney General has deemed " Safe for consumer use " after passing testing by private independent testing laboratories to meet Mass. Specs.

Well with my being a resident of California, I know nothing about the original OP's post concerning major restrictions.. Plus I have had for a long time a 'State of California License to Carry a Concealed Pistol, Revolver, Or Other Firearm'.. Yes it does list each of my CCW Weapons, that I can carry.

In today's news - California's State Bill AB-962 concerning sales of ammunition has been found to be unconstitutional. So it may be repealed, before it takes effect..

Gary In Ohio, please check your facts. I can still buy and use lead based ammunition, here in California.

Quick question RF
If you buy a new gun and decide it works better for CCW, what hoops do you have to go through to get the new gun in the license?
Do you just go to the courthouse and add it or what?

Cornhusker - 1st I have to go and qualify with an approved CCW instructor at a firing range obtaining a passing grade of 70% or better. That score is obtained from firing at an 8 & 1/2 by 11 inches blank sheet of paper at a distance of only 15 feet. A hole punched anywhere on that piece of paper, is consider a 'hit'..

Once I receive the range paperwork, I then have to call the County Sheriff's Main Office for an in person appointment. That is for them to physically verify the manufacturer, model, serial number, and caliber of the weapon being added to the CCW License. During the procedure - it has to be unloaded, with a gunlock. Placed inside a locked hard sided gun-case at all times.

Then I wait until I receive in the mail (a couple of weeks at most) my 'Revised' CCW License, that will list all of my permitted CCW weapons. Legally by California state law in Humboldt County, I can open carry any of my handguns, due to the population of my County being less than 200,000 persons.

The only monetary costs associated with this procedure to add/ remove a weapon is - the $30.00 range fee, and what it costs me for the firing of 25 rounds of required caliber ammunition per weapon/ and fuel for travel to the range. You can add/ change multiple weapons at one time, as many times as you want! But there is a limit of three weapons per license, as per state law. You just need to qualify at the firing range, and get your certificate to turn in at the main office.

The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office does not charge any fees to add/ remove a weapon from our CCW License. Or for when you do change your physical address, within the County.

I do get charged $72.00 dollars every two years by the Sheriff's Office, when I have to requalify at the firing range and do the renewal paperwork with the H.C.S.O. for my State of California CCW License. Which is valid anywhere in California. Plus I believe (without doing a quick search in my files) it is recognized in 23 other states in the U.S..

I do know for sure that Michigan and Arizona will allow me to CCW there with my California CCW License - since I travel to those states the most, to visit my gun-carrying family members..

Wow, RF, all I had to do was pay a fee, be fingerprinted and pass a background check. My CPL doesn't list my CCW, but I have to have it on my person at all times when carrying. That's it. I renew every 5 years, I believe.

New law last year. In AZ you can conceal carry anything you can conceal with no license. If you can't conceal, then open carry (that includes fully automatic weapons with a Fed Tax Stamp). There are a few places that post no guns, but they are rare (mostly bars). In over 50 years living here I have only seen one person carrying a fully automatic gun.

I'm sorry RF that you have to go through all of that to be able to carry. Here in FL its $117 for 7 years. I can carry whatever I want, and as much as I want at one time. There's no going to the SO to get their blessing, no having to jump through hoops to change the carry gun, no fees every few years, etc.

Explorer - according to my brother in Tucson, that new law is for legal residents only.. Yet Arizona will recognize my California CCW License, when I go that way in my travels.

Usingmyrights - Heck all of that is no bother at all at least for me. Hey, I will fill out the forms, pay my fees, and jump through the hoops in order to be legal.

The CCW Instructor that I use is a fellow Marine, and I know many of the persons employed in the Sheriff's Office. So it is also a social occasion when I do requalify, or change a weapon.

I guess that is the is price that I have to pay for carrying a concealed weapon while living up here amongst the redwoods along the coast. I could go and move to another geographically undesirable (to me) region with fewer laws outside of California, but I really have have enjoyed living here in this County for 29 years so far..

At least you can carry, even if you have to jump through hoops to do it, so that's a good thing
Here, it cost $100 the first time, after taking a required course and qualifying.
It's good for 5 years, then to renew, you just get a new picture taken, show proof of vision (a driver's license will do) and pay $50 and you are good for another 5 years.
We have to do it at the State Patrol headquarters, but Nebraska is a shall issue state, so they can't turn you down if you pass the background check.
