Super great deals..

Sigh. I wish you guys lived closer.
At my salvage grocer's the past few days they have had the greatest deals.
A case of gorgeous red bell peppers for $4.
Huge bags of oranges for $1.
Huge bags of apples for $2.
I got two cases of red bells for freezing and deyhdrating and I will make orange marmalade and more apple butter and apple chips.
I wish I could share with you all because I know you appreciate the savings and the stocking up.
They have pallets full, but they won't be gorgeous for many more days.

Our salvage store doesn't have fresh or frozen stuff. They did have organic peanut butter for 29cents though and some other great deals.

I just sliced and froze them all. I ended up with 6 2 gal freezer bags full.. on top of my own peppers in the freezer.
Not bad for $4.
Marmalade will wait until tomorrow...

I miss having a salvage grocery store!

A couple months ago, one of the local grocery stores had cases of mangos for $3.50 ea. I didn't get one because I didn't know what to do with a case.

We don't have those here, anything excess goes to the local food banks, which are in very poor shape this year. WalMart just donated $100,000 to the Food Bank, which will help so much to distribute what goods they have across the state. They are already helping over 6000 families.

That's not including all the homeless in shelters, mind you. Or the real poverty in the Bush where food prices are so high, the average American can't wrap their minds around the costs.

BTW a single red bell pepper is over $2 here, easy. Oranges run around $2 a pound. Apples sometimes drop to around $1.25 in season, but generally stay between $1.75 over $2 a pound for specialty ones like honey crisp, etc.

Here's a link to a page that has these stores listed.

Unfortunetly, my area isn't one of them. Take that back there is one in my area, sort of. It's in Seneca Falls - Glenwood Foods, 2905 Rt-318Ph 315-568-2050. Two reviews give it 4 stars but the ladies were within 1/2 hour driving distance.
Might have to check out PA.

Good score Chickenista!

Thanks Pelenaka! I'm going to put a copy of it in my truck for when we are traveling. Wouldn't mind getting in on some of those deals.

Jay's Salvage. They just moved into a bigger store, but if you google the Driver's License's place in Forest City, it is right next door. Only one turn from the main road through town.
The thing is with salvage.. not everyday is a good day. I mean they have great savings all the time, but not always what you want.
They have Hudson Creamery flour for $1.50 for 5lbs though. It is the only reason I have been able to get my little bakery business going at all.
But their cases of canned good are around $2 etc and Mon and Thurs (?) they have Pepperridge Farm bread - 3 for $2. Great to fill the freezer with 15 grain bread. I can't make 15 grain for that.

We get the majority of our food at 2 different salvage stores. One about 22 miles away the other one is the other direction about 40 miles away. We have gotten some real bargains. We joke that out van automatically turns into these stores when we go into town. But neither one sell produce. Sure wish they did.
