I like to run an engine dry before I store it for any length of time. On my generator, that meant I had to install a fuel shutoff valve between the gas tank and the carb. Also, if the gas is going to be in the tank for more than 3 months or so, I put a bit of Pri-G in to keep it fresh.
The way I look at it, if the carb is dry, the gas is protected with Pri-G and it is stored in a dry location, I don't see a need for starting each month. However, I do make sure it is OK before winter sets in.
