Overheard at work today....
Near the end of the day some of the dept were around the boss's desk talking to him and looking at the photos of the Pacific NW where he had a vacation last week.
As I went to the copying machine outside the office I over heard "and he had big storage area of wheat and stuff, and gas masks and like expecting the end of the world". Then another was talking about how it might be a religious thing since Morman's believe in having a large pantry and stuff.
But at least one of the people do have a garden (just brought in cukes today), and the others are more yuppy type.
I didn't say a word, but strange to hear the Survival being discussed and as you'd expect rather ridiculed.

They think we are nuts for what we do, and say awful things about us, but when the SHTF they will be the first ones at the door begging or shooting us for what we have.
Sad isn't it

Well some of us in the Pacific North West, actually do own gas masks, have stored food, and lots of firearms/ ammunition. Plus we do know how to use them in an expeditious manner.
Also don't forget, that we live here in the Pacific NW with the spectre of a major Earthquake occuring at any moment!
Angie just out of curosity, where in the Pacific North West was your boss on vacation at??? I wonder if he went to visit one of our "Oil Free Beaches"?

Prepping is a natural part of the lifestyle for most people in the PNW. I don't know anybody here who doesn't keep lots of food and supplies stored and have emergency plans in place in anticipation of "The Big One" or a blow-out from one of the many, many volcanoes here. Whole towns and communities along the west coast have community programs and meetings set up to help people keep up-to-date re: current emergency preparations, evacuation routes, emergency response team meetings, etc and there are regular programs on TV and radio about how to stay prepared, what supplies to store, what to do, where to go if it's necessary to evacuate. Heck, there's even a huge section in the front of the phone book and the yellow pages book devoted to emergency preparations and survival for each of the localities. It's just a normal part of our life. I suspect many other west coasters on the board could testify to that.

radiofish - it was somewhere near the Canadian border as they went to Canada on a ferry. Did lots of coastal boating, and something that looks like a surfboard only longer and it's paddled. I had looked at the photos earlier and did not get the specific city, but I'm thinking Seattle area or near there.

Our friend from Liverpool, UK stayed with us for almost three weeks. We had a great time as usual. Last year we stayed with her in Liverpool.
When she saw the items I have in the basement she was amazed. No, I don't have as much as I want/need as it is "a work in progress" and I think it is for most of us here.
She is alone now since her husband passed two years ago. She shops about three times a week. She would be hard pressed to eat for two weeks without shopping. My advice was for her to stock some food for emergencies. England is a target for terrorist as we are.
I hope she thinks about what I said and does something about it.

Angie, when I first started Homeschooling in the early 90's I was constantly ridiculed and put down by many people. NOW, however, people ask me for help on how to get started and what are the best methods, books, etc...
When something makes sense and is helpful and gets results, eventually people come around and start questioning if what society has always taught them is really valid. I am amazed at the change in people towards prepping. Even my hard-core suburban dream relatives are starting to ask me "how" now. I love it!

Unfortunalty everyone "Knows" Mormons have lots and lots of food storage.
As a one time emergency preparedness specialist in my LDS (Mormon) Ward (congregation) I can tell you that about 10% of LDS (Mormons) have any food storage at all (beyond a couple weeks) and perhaps 1 or 2% have a full years worth of storage for their families. Many of the old timers store mainly wheat even though they have no idea what to do with it and its probably been sitting for 20 - 30 years in their basement or closet ot worse yet their garage.
So when the SHTF don't expect to go to your Mormon neighbors for food -- most likely they'll be trying to get some from you.

Angie - that sounds like the Puget Sound area to the North East of Seattle up towards Bellingham or Anacortes, Washington.
I have many friends up there and it is a really beautiful area with lots of ferry boats between the islands One of my favorite spots is the San Juan Islands and Friday Harbor. I stopped there when taking the large ferry boats between Vancouver Island and the Washington State mainland.

Well Angie please don't tell your 'yuppie' friends that a bunch of us actually store wheat, grind it, and really make *homemade bread*.
course if they tasted it they'd likely say yuck . . .give me some "Wonder" bread.
Gotta wonder how those yuppie types will fair when and if a large amount hits the fan..............

Well, sorry to say I agree with your co-worker. They person they were talking about is CRAZY. I would never show someone with the mind set of your co-worker my stores! That guy is just inviting trouble, look at how many people that guy has told, already. If someone wanted over the next few months I bet they could easily find out where exactly the "crazy with the stores" is, without your co-worker even realizing he's giving away that information.
