Do U really stock MREs?
Yep I've tried them...
Give me a bowl of cold pinto beans any day!
Plus they seem a little pricey.
No bake cookies are my choice to take hiking, hunting....or any other time for that matter...YUMMY! So I stock Oats, Peanut butter, sugar and margarine (or butter if you have a cow)
Heck just a jar of peanut butter is better than an MRE....just sayin'

Heck no. I don't care if I ever eat another one. If you can get your hand on a crate of the arctic MRE's then do so. Otherwise there are better things to eat.
The only GOOD thing about eating those dehydrated MRE's is that after 3-4 days of living on them you won't need to dig a latrine. Nobody would be able to use it anyway.

Most of my preps are canned or dried goods. Our intent is to shelter in place if the SHTF. However if we have to hit the road, we do have some MRE's that we can carry with us.

If someone is depending on them for survival, what the heck will they do after eating the last one? I prefer to have real food.

Dh loves them! We store a few, just in case...I am not sure what. But since he loves them....why not? The biggest benefit is that they will last for years and years and years on the shelf.

Hi Guys,
Obviously you guys have never really been hungry, after C rats, MRE's are yuppie camping food.
I always keep a couple in the truck for places and times I cannot for one reason or other I cannot get home or find something I will eat.
I'd much rather eat an MRE than eat anything at a McDonalds!
Now would I chose to eat them 3 meals a day (unless they were free)
Ernie you know that that binding effect is on purpose right? The extremly high activity and extremlly high stress situations, you know like combat, can really open up your bowls.
Cheers,
Dutch

I have a small stock of MREs and Mountain House type foods, for the worst of times. I don't find them disgusting, but they'd have to be something we ate during a bug out or other emergency. I'd eat just about anything if I were hungry enough, including the Datrex bars I have for the most extreme emergencies.

We have 12+ cases of MRE's. Did we buy them? No way. What happened was this....
After Hurricane Ike last year, FEMA was giving away cases of MRE's to anyone. We did not go get any-- of course we had no need for them because we have always had stocks of food stored back to live on during hard times. However, after the hurricane, as the weeks went by and life returned to normal, folks started getting rid of their cases of MRE's. Why, I don't know; it seemed odd to me that people wouldn't think that they should hang on to them in order to be prepared for future problems, but nonetheless two neighbors and their adult children asked us if we wanted their cases of MRE's.
Well, sure we did.
They are now stored with our other food and supply stores.
I've tried a few just to see what they tasted like. The pasta meals seem to be the best to me. The 'bread' is interesting. The pound cake is horrible but in a true starvation situation (and maybe not even such an extreme) it would be acceptable. I do like the heating packs. The peanut butter is really good.
I would never buy MRE's because of the cost. I can prepare my own food stores much cheaper. One benefit would definetely be portability. However, it would have been foolish to turn down several cases of free MRE's from people who no longer wanted them.

During Katrina they delivered pallets of them to our local fire dept. where hubby is chief. We announced many many times on the radio that we had them at the fire dept. and NO ONE would come get them. We gave some away and several firemen took cases home to use and to the elderly but we still have cases of them piled in the firehall. I don't know how long they will last but I they are probably bad by now.

I've had the MRE's supplied by Meal Kit Supply Canada (MKSC) produced for the Canadian military. They are quite good but not something I'd want to eat every day.

One MRE is very filling. After I ate one (minus the drink mix and coffee) I didn't want anything else to eat all day. Made me feel kind of :P and I can't imagine eating three. A body would have to be running and physically stressed all the time in order to manage two or three a day.

If your eating freeze dried MREs they are really really old as we havent used anything dehydrated in those for over a decade (using water in the heater pack is optional, using scarce water just to hydrate your food and be able to eat it is not a good idea for the military). They also have a definite inspection date and shelf life before they need to be inspected by a vet. though I suspect thats just a precaution and they would last for a long long time.
I keep a couple in my truck in case I get stranded in the winter but they are pretty gross. I have often wanted to visit one of the factories making the entrees just to see if there really is any hint of quality control at all.

I don't have them in my food storage at home but I do use them for my emergency car kits/Get Home Bags. Figure I'll eat just about anything in that situation and they'll store well in the car.

We are looking to buy a few. Not because we want them, but more as a learning tool. Our kids hear terms tossed around like prepping, dehydrating, BOB's, MRE's, etc. We want them to understand all the terms. We also want them to understand what we can, dry etc when MRE's are all ready made all you have to do is hit the order button. My guess is 1 MRE and they will start asking how they can help with the next canning or dehydrator load.

Yep. I have a few cases of MRE's put back because they are edible, some are actually delicious, they are easily transported and the shelf life is calculated in radioactive half life.
