new place for bulk food?
I was on another forum earlier and they suggested going to local restuarant supply houses for bulk food purchases, I'm going to look into it ! They say they are cheaper than Costco and Sam's club stores. Just wanted to give you another place to check for bargins on bulk food.

I use a restaurant supply warehouse near where I work. Last week I bought a half gallon size container of bay leaf for $18. Do you know how much that would have cost at the grocery store!!!!!! We also buy popcorn in 12½ lb. bags for $4.25 and large containers of popcorn butter flavor (can't recall the price since they last forever!). Large containers of cinnamon sticks for pickling and ground cinnamon. They have a lot of other seasonings but those are the ones I get there. The store has another name but they are warehouse of Northern Lights restaurant supply.

In our area we have Gordon Food Service--GFS. Same with any other store, watch the unit prices. I get great deals on lunch meat, cheese, some spices there, but other things are very high. The best part is--no membership fee!!

Some things are better and some are worse. At ours though the basics are getting harder to come by. If you are in the market for premade stuff they have a lot of things including the filling for donuts.

If you are looking for items besides food, ie cookware, plates etc check online.
The one I've ordered from the most is http://www.equippers.com (once you order from them they will start sending you catalogs)
I'm getting items that are a higher quality and for a cheaper price then the restaurant I work for.

Some places where we have lived there have been restaurant wholesale outlets.
My Dw would get a license to operate a catering business from the city, and with that in hand she could shop wholesale.
Which is far better than Costco or Sams.
But not every area has wholesale outlets.
Where we are now has a Denis' which is a restaurant supplier, but they are not wholesale.

I love cash and carry. Use it all the time for food and other things. No business license needed. Just cash and you can buy it.

I shop at Cash & Carry in Spokane. The last time I was there a man waiting in line behind me asked why I shopped there instead of Costco. I told him I didn't like paying for the "privilege" of shopping in a store! I find what I need at C&C & don't get tempted to buy a lot of stuff I don't really need.

I get quite a bit at GFS. It is the only bulk-type store that is close to me. It is 125 miles to the closest WM/Sam's/BJ's and around 150 to the closest Costco. Like anywhere else, some things are bargains and some may be the same or a little higher, but when I start figuring in shipping or the 125-mile-one-way trip, I figure it evens out. When we go up to Miami for another reason, we will hit a bulk store or when Hubs goes up to visit his brother, he calls me while he goes through Costco or BJ's.

I shop at Cash & Carry in Spokane too. They have sales just like any other store and we stock up on those items each time we go. There is a Rainbow food store next to them (dent and ding). But they don't have near as good of prices. For spices though we go to the WinCo bulk food section.

I also love Cash & Carry. You can also order case good prices and pick up a few days later thru them.
For Paper products another great place to shop are stores who cater to Hospitals, restaurants. Have great deals on cleaning products and paper towels, and TP.

for those of you in Spokane there is a place called Spokane or North West pea and bean. Cann't find the reciete right now.
You can get dryed lentles, split peas, pearl barley and whole dryed peas in 25 pound bags. if you can get 20 bags they give you a bigger discount. Maybe split an order with a freind. Call before going as prices fluctuate. They have other beans as well. My dh and I go once a year and use the stuff we get there to feed us and our dogs and some times i soak the whole peas for the rabbits also.
We have lentle with barley soup alot. Its good with tomatoes and italian seasonings and cooks up fast in a pressure cooker
