When *it* hit the fan in 1927 (video link)

It took me a LONG time to get this thing downloaded so I could watch it. High speed internet users can go watch it without jumping through hoops.

Silent documentary of one of the worst floods in recorded American history. Towns and farms from Illinois to the Mississippi Delta were under water.

One of the points of interest to me is how rescue authorities took great care to rescue and care for the farm animals along with the people. They don't do that any more.

Rescue operations were more speedy and efficient than you might imagine for 1927; particularly remarkable considering the vast scale of the destruction.

The quality is pretty fair. Some of the title boards are too dark or blurry to read.

Thanks for sharing, great video.
I was impressed at how the animals were considered, as compared to nowadays when they are left. I remember one of the recent floods a pig was shot on the sandbags.

..............I've always thought they should build several.....Mississippi Arks.......like large floating barges with diesel engines so stranded folks could have a place to sleep until the river went back down . Maybe build them with several layers and simply moor them at a dock that was accessiable by small boat . , fordy

amazing how they didn't film any of the people standing around whining about getting any help. They just seemed to stand back up and get back to work and building a life for themselves.

I thought this one showing woody woodpecker was kinda interesting

My dad was born in 1913. He talked a lot about the flood of 27. His family lived on a farm close to the White River in Arkansas. Evidently the White River flooded big time. His family moved their belongings into a tent and lived there until the water receded enough to return home. I wish he were still around so I could ask more questions. And I dont remember him speaking of anyone waiting around for outside help; they all helped each other and made do the best they could.

My great grandparents lived through the 27flood. They lost everything in their house. My grandmother tells how they reluctantly took the check the Salvation Army gave them, and even fibbed about how much they lost so they wouldn't get to much charity.
They would rather do without and work it out then to recieve charity a free check.
You don't seem much of that any more - usualy people are lying about how much they lost to get more money.

I'm on dialup too. I pasted the "512kb.mp4" link in my download manager. Almost 74mb! It took many hours to download it.

But now I have it on my hard drive and I can watch it anytime I want to.

...and then finding someone to sue so that they can have MORE. We have been seeing that from the flooding June 2008 here in Wisconsin. Couple of families who lost their houses (built right on the edge of a lake) to the flooding that happen when we got 6x the rain normal in a week and a lake washed out a road. Neither family had flood insurance and while they got paid by the Feds fair market value in disaster assistance...they decided they need a couple million $$ because "the city of Baraboo did not provide adequate flood protection"

It's going to be interesting if we ever have a region wide (or country wide) disaster on the scale of new Orleans and Katrina. I have to wonder what the folks who pick themselves up and keep going are going to do with all the whiners. Will we see a vast "go away, leave me alone, just DIE already" sentiment; or will there be a collective shrug, sigh and "can't let them die, I guess, better try to help 'em" attitude?

Call me a pessimist, but I don't see it having a good outcome if a region-wide or country-wide disaster strikes either of our countries.
