Food Storage. Bucket Packing With Mylar Bags/02 Absorbers

A short video "how to". Thought this might be helpful for newbies. Couldn't get it to download from the Frugal Squirrel site. But, I found it on YouTube. Is there anything that's not on YouTube?

Although it has been clearly written out how to do this, I found the video extremely helpful (I'm one who does better to SEE it) so tyvm for posting.
I ordered my first batch of bags and absorbers this morning and couldn't get the video to work...never would have thought of YouTube!

apologies for the double post... but the video brought up a new question for me...

I thought I'd read somewhere NOT to put the absorbers into the bucket itself as they would cause it to become misshapen...but in the first video the girl dropped 2 of them into the bucket after she'd sealed her mylar bag.

Could someone please clear this up for me?

It is overkill and not necessary. Just leave the bucket unsealed until the bag sucks down to make sure it is air tight then seal the bucket.

If you remove most of the air just before sealing the O2 absorber will create a vacuum in the bag. I seal all but a corner, leaving enough room to put in the O2 absorbers. I usually do 10 buckets at once and get them all ready except the last corner. Then I put 5 O2 absorbers per bag, iron the corner except for the last 1/2 inch and insert a large drinking straw in that corner. I suck out all the air I can without straining and seal the last corner.

Be sure to thump the bucket till you get as much in there as you can. That removes a lot of air and makes the best use of the bucket.

Can you use buckets without a mylar bag? Or is the mylar bag essential?

Also, what about flour? Would you open up the bags and dump the flour into the mylar or bucket or just keep them in the bags?

All my "in use" buckets just have the grains, beans or sugar right in the bucket. I use screw on lids for those (Gamma Lids). I've been looking at containers that come with Gamma Lids that are marketed for petfood. I think they would work really well in the kitchen or pantry. They are prettier than buckets too.

Anything for long term storage really should have the mylar and O2 absorbers. The buckets are not completely impermeable to gas (O2, odors etc) and the food will last longer and be fresher in the mylar. The O2 absorbers will kill off insects that hatch before they can do damage and will slow down or stop many foods from going rancid (caused by oxidation). I would take flour out of the original bag because the bags have insect eggs in them sometimes. The insects crawl on the bags and lay eggs in the crevices and seams.

I hadn't thought of packing a bucket with a variety of foods...that's a great idea and avoids having to open three or four containers to get what you need to make a meal.

Can Mylar bags be re-sealed and re-used?

Yes they can. I always seal them on the very edge and don't cut off the extra. Just make sure there is no dust or flour on the two sides when you seal them.

My vacuum sealer has a hose attachment thingie...I wonder if one could use that to suck out the last little bit of air?

It isn't strong enough. I tried. Alan makes an adapter to use with a regular vacuum, but I don't know what he did to make it.

Wow, that's good to know! I got the thing to vaccum seal mason jars, but haven't figured how to use it yet...I'm being lazy

I just ordered some O2 absorbers, but I'd held off on mylar bags because they are so expensive. My superpails come with a mylar bag inside (I haven't opened one yet to check, but I think they do), so if I can re-use it, I might hold off. I've got a couple of gamma seals for pails I open to use, so that will have to do for a while.
