I didn't think there was any premise about college admissions being fair. The Federal Gov has determined that admissions should be "equal", which turns out not to be fair at all.

.................Colleges have established minimum SAT scores because the applicants who achieve these scores can usually perform at the intellectual level that the degree programs require ! College personnel who admit students by adding 200 or so points to their SAT score have NO Control or Sayso when it comes to the expectations of the professors who are not going to add 25 UNearned points to the scores of students who can't perform . So , the low achieving minority students just end up flunking out . , fordy

I think they've been doing this for many years. I wonder how many points they give to dark skinned Kenyans who have 2 names and smoke dope?

Well, not quite. First of all, Princeton does not change student SAT scores. The information in the original post is based on a Princeton University STUDY that looked at how college admissions are affected by race/ethnicity, using SAT scores as a benchmark.

Top colleges weight student applications based on nonacademic attributes. This is nothing new.

It actually started about a century ago when college entrance exam scores were used to rate applicants at Harvard. To the surprise - and alarm - of college officials, when students were admitted based on test scores, the student body began to change and become less white anglo-saxon protestant. By the 1920's, more than a fifth of entering students were Jewish. Given the times, that was considered a very bad thing. The admissions process was changed to include evaluating students' backgrounds in order to protect the desirable New England WASP character of the school. Applicants were scored as more or less desirable, and this rating was factored into the admissions decision.

Harvard and other schools still take into account applicants' race/ethnicity when making admissions decisions, but now there is a shift to limit how many Asians are in the student body.
