In answer to Angie's question...

...about why no one reported the offensive comments in the other thread:

I think that, as this forum tends to attract a more secure, open-minded, less-PC audience, the membership here tends to prefer to tell someone who says something offensive why they disagree with them, rather than try to shut them down and have them censored.

I'm not disagreeing with your choice to close down that thread- as a mod, you have concerns and considerations that I don't have to worry about, and I don't want to second-guess you from the cheap seats.

Rather, I just figured that your question was worth answering, and the answer, in my opinion, is complimentary of our forum as it points to us being a membership of more free-thinking people than the general populace writ-large.

RATS.. I missed the drama...

I don't know what's up, but as to why I wouldn't have reported it if I would have seen it, I say live and let live.. the only threads I ever report are spammers.... Well.. Unless someone were to let fly with a huge gaggle of what some would consider to be offensive words... Myself, I use those words every day.. I work real hard not to use any of them here..

It's still down below, just locked. You didn't miss anything good, though.

My answer to Angie's question...it didn't need to be reported because the poster had already deleted it himself and apologized. And sometimes certain things I don't believe are OK are allowed here, so I don't bother to report them.

I have been a mod (not here) and I've said before I don't think you could pay me enough to do it again. Its a thankless (for the most part) job in which there is always someone who is in a snit. Why did you . . .Why didn't you. . .

Now I didn't see the post this refers to (I also tend to miss the good stuff)

With that said I have to agree with the OP here. In GC we all tend to have our big boy or girl undies on and it would take quite a bit before most of would even think about reporting a post(er). I truly think if someone did get out of line a large number of us from all sides of whatever the topic was would call them out. I think most of us realize (and a lot of us have done it) there are times you post something 'in the heat of battle' that you regret almost the instant you hit the submit reply button. Or at least after you've had a couple of hours to think about it.

To paraphrase Voltaire; I may disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

Personally I think insults and vulgarities are signs of either a weak mind or a weak argument.

Actually I deleted it. And it did need to be reported. And for anyone that won't report something and then say that that is enough for them to leave HT, well, that is a problem.

But that's okay.

And just because you have your big girl and boy pants on, this is STILL part of Homesteading Today and ALL the site rules still apply. You may want to review them and the rules at the top of the forum.

Thanks

I had some posts in the offending thread, and probably instigated some problems with some uncomfortable thoughts. Sorry.

Some of the posts just quoted the main deleted post, and not enough other content to bother with just editing out the quoted deleted section.

Perhaps it wasn't the post I thought that was the problem. By the time I got to the thread that poster had already edited his post to delete the offensive comment, but someone else had quoted it so it was still in the thread. I didn't see any of the later deleted ones. I assumed you meant the first one.

I have reported things occasionally that I think go against the rules, and sometimes they're left up, so then I assume my understanding of what's allowed is incorrect so I don't bother to report anything unless it's really bad.

Thanks Angie. I re-read the rules at the top but I see many instances of "flaming"..or maybe I'm just thin skinned. I guess it's a fine line though.

My computer died and I just got my new one up and running. I knew when I started reading this that you had a hand in it somehow.

Evelyn Beatrice Hall (1868 – after 1938), who wrote under the pseudonym
S. G. Tallentyre
, was an English writer best known for her biography of Voltaire
entitled The Friends of Voltaire. which she completed in 1906.

In her biography on Voltaire, Hall wrote the phrase:

"I disapprove of what you say,
but I will defend to the death your right to say it"

(which is often misattributed to Voltaire himself) as an illustration of Voltaire's beliefs.

I must admit, I see this too. Posters, on this board in particular, are routinely allowed to mock and ridicule liberals, greenies, Democrats, and assorted and sundry other "sheeple."
There is a very visible double standard.

However, given the current atmosphere of the board, one either learns to accept this, tilts at windmills until they get themselves banned, or moves on.

Is that why so many folks are getting banned? Even people like Paquebot, who has provided me with seeds and good advice for years? (I read the sticky at the top..its just SO MANY good folks I have befriended over the years have been banned in recent times, that I wonder why I bother logging on any more.

I don't know exactly why so much banning is happening. I also miss a lot of old buddies who got banned. Kinda sad.

It seems like often is the wrong people that are banned. Some are let go for offenses not remotely comparable to some of the snide rudeness that others get away with constantly.

There are most definitely Teflon members.
