Signing nominating petitions

I was at a public event last weekend and there was someone attempting to collect signatures to get on the ballot for elected office. I signed because I feel that anyone who desires to be on the ballot should be encouraged. It doesn't mean I will ultimately vote for that person just that I feel that more options are almost always better. I didn't think to ask party affiliation. I overheard the interaction with the next person approached. They immediately asked about party affiliation and stated that they could never sign to support anyone of that party. Which response would you give?

Would you sign for someone running on the communist or Nazi party ticket? I could only sign a nomination petition for a person I could see supporting.

Yes. Giving someone access to the ballot doesn't do any harm. Exposing bad ideas can be just as valuable as exposing those we agree with. I don't expect any good ideas to come from the entities you mentioned, but without hearing someone I don't know what ideas, good or bad they may have. Only providing access to those we are already predisposed to support only limits our choices.

Not that it matters, but I'd never sign anything like that... I've never met a politician I felt told the truth, wasn't a thief, or wasn't in it for their selves... so I can't bring myself to support anyone I wouldn't be able to call a friend I trusted..

I am with the OP I would sign for someone to run whether I would vote for them or not. We have a real problem with not enough people running for positions, opening the field is a good idea in my opinion.

Nope.. to me that's putting the stamp of approval on allowing politicians to screwing us..

I've said before, a good way to show them we're not happy is no one vote.. not a single vote cast.. then who would be in office?

We can't ever get a decent politician in.. what better way to show we're not happy with any of them? We can't toss them out.. so maybe just not put any in?

If some mass calamity happened on election day, think Biblical-proportions, that prevented every citizen 18 years of age or older from reaching the polls, there would still be a BUNCH of precincts with 110% voter turn-out.

Even if you don't really like any candidate, you should still cast a ballot if for no other reason than to dilute the fraud.

That is only if your ballet is accurately recorded. Remember the last Presidential election.

Are you sure your signature is even going to count?

Here in PA, you have to have only the people in your party sign your petition. Republicans can only sign for Republicans, Democrats can only sign for Democrats. And you have to be careful how many you sign, because if you have three people running for coroner - you can only sign one. You can only sign the same amount you would be able to vote for.

Some positions, people can cross file. Here in PA, if you are a Democrat and running for School Board, you can cross file and also get signatures from Republicans to be on the primary ballot as well. However, you have to have a Republican get the Republican signatures - you being a Democrat are not allowed to get signatures other than Democrat signatures.
